History of Muráň CastleDejiny — Muránsky hrad

Muráň was built where no sensible person would build a house: 935 metres up, on a limestone crag at the lip of a karst plateau, well over an hour of climbing above the nearest village. Everything that happened to it follows from that one decision. It was never a comfortable seat and never a busy administrative centre — it was a place to be hard to reach, which suited a robber baron, then a rebel garrison, and in the end nobody at all.Muránsky hrad postavili tam, kde by si rozumný človek dom nepostavil: 935 metrov vysoko, na vápencovom brale na hrane krasovej planiny, dobre vyše hodiny výstupu nad najbližšou dedinou. Všetko, čo sa s ním dialo, vyplýva z tohto jediného rozhodnutia. Nikdy nebol pohodlným sídlom ani rušným správnym centrom — bol miestom, kde bol človek ťažko dosiahnuteľný, čo vyhovovalo najprv lúpežnému rytierovi, potom povstaleckej posádke a napokon už nikomu.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov

  1. 1241 · first named in writing in 12711241 · prvá písomná zmienka 1271 Built because of the Mongols, not destroyed by themPostavený pre Mongolov, nie zničený nimi

In the spring of 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the army of the Kingdom of Hungary and rode across the country, and King Béla IV came out of hiding convinced that wooden forts on earth banks were worth nothing. His answer was stone on high rock, and Muráň belongs to that generation: a royal castle raised in the thirteenth century and first named in a document of 1271. What the first castle looked like we do not know, because it was rebuilt in the first half of the fifteenth century and the rebuild covered the older work over. What we can still read is the choice of site — 935 metres up on the edge of the plateau, with cliffs doing most of the defending — and that choice was made by people who had just watched a cavalry army ride through a kingdom. The village below the rock appears in writing fifty years later, in 1321, as a settlement by the castle's home farm.

  2. 1529 – 1549 · and the raid of 15741529 – 1549 · a nájazd v roku 1574 Matej Bašo, the robber baron of GemerMatej Bašo, lúpežný rytier Gemera

The Ottoman wars pulled the kingdom's soldiers south and left the northern uplands to look after themselves — and a castle nobody could climb suddenly became a business opportunity. From about 1529 Muráň was held by Matej Bašo, who for twenty years raided out of it across Malohont, Gemer and Spiš: a robber baron, meaning a nobleman who behaved like a bandit because there was nobody within reach to stop him. In 1549 the assembly of the kingdom finally sent a royal army up here, and the castle that could not be climbed was taken. Accounts of his end differ — Slovak sources say he was killed as he tried to slip away, others that he was captured and executed — but either way he was finished, and the kingdom had shown it could reach even this rock when it decided to. Down in the valley the war was no abstraction: in 1574 Ottoman troops plundered and burned the village of Muráň and carried its men off into captivity. V doline pritom vojna nebola nič abstraktné: v roku 1574 Osmani obec Muráň vyrabovali, vypálili a mužov odvliekli do zajatia.

  3. 1644 · 1666 · 16701644 · 1666 · 1670 The night ladders, and what they costNočné rebríky a ich cena

In 1644, during yet another rising against the Habsburgs, Muráň was held for the rebel side by Mária Séčiová, a widow who ran the whole estate herself. The imperial commander sent to take it, František Vešeléni, worked out that the crag made a storm impossible — so, tradition says, the two arranged for ladders to go up the rock at night at an agreed place, and the castle changed sides without a battle. The night escalade is a tradition rather than a documented military report; the outcome is not in doubt. Vešeléni took Muráň in 1644, the two married, and a later poet named her the Venus of Muráň. Twenty years on he was leading the magnates' conspiracy of 1666 against Emperor Leopold I. He died before it was discovered; when it broke, imperial troops occupied the castle in 1670, the estates were confiscated, and Mária ended her life in confinement far from the plateau. The romance and the ruin belong to the same decision.V roku 1644, počas ďalšieho z povstaní proti Habsburgovcom, držala Muráň pre povstalcov Mária Séčiová, vdova, ktorá celé panstvo spravovala sama. O dvadsať rokov viedol veľmožské sprisahanie z roku 1666 proti cisárovi Leopoldovi I. Zomrel skôr, než ho odhalili; keď prasklo, hrad v roku 1670 obsadili cisárske vojská, panstvá skonfiškovali a Mária dožila v zajatí ďaleko od planiny. Romanca aj skaza patria tomu istému rozhodnutiu.

  4. 1702 · 1709–1710 · 1720 · 17601702 · 1709 – 1710 · 1720 · 1760 Two fires and a saleDva požiare a jeden predaj

Muráň did not end in a siege. The castle burned twice in the eighteenth century — in 1702, which local tradition puts down to a lightning strike, and again in 1760 — and by the end of that century nobody lived in it any more. The estate carried on perfectly well without it: in 1720 the royal chamber sold Muráň to Count Štefan Koháry, and from the Kohárys it passed to their relatives the Coburgs, who held it until 1945. That is the same family, and the same inheritance, that owns the story of the manor at Svätý Anton at the other end of this region — a useful reminder that the map of Slovakia was for centuries a map of a few dozen families. The century was hard on the people below the rock as well as on the walls: the plague of 1709–1710 is recorded at Muráň as having killed 446 of them.Muráň neskončil obliehaním. Hrad v osemnástom storočí dvakrát vyhorel — v roku 1702, čo miestna tradícia pripisuje úderu blesku, a znova v roku 1760 — a koncom storočia už v ňom nikto nebýval.

  5. 18481848 The ruin stops collectingZrúcanina prestáva vyberať

Here is something about ruins worth understanding. The castle had stood empty for fifty years, but the estate that carried its name was very much alive: the villages below still owed the lord of Muráň labour days and dues, because that is what being a subject meant. The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom across the Habsburg lands, and the farmers of the Muráň valley stopped owing anything to anyone and became owners of the strips they had always worked. It took decades of surveying and lawsuits to settle who owned which strip, but the change itself was the biggest in the everyday life of these villages in five hundred years — and it happened long after the castle above them had gone silent. A castle can be a ruin and a power at the same time.

In 1938 the First Vienna Award gave the southern strip of Gemer — Rožňava, Tornaľa and the country around them — to Hungary, and the new border ran a few dozen kilometres south of here. The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and was crushed at the end of October, and the fighting then moved into exactly this kind of country: deep forest, a plateau nobody could search, and villages that fed the partisans. The reprisal came in December 1944, when twelve men of Muráň were shot for helping them. The front reached this corner of Gemer in the winter that followed.V roku 1938 pripadol Viedenskou arbitrážou južný pás Gemera — Rožňava, Tornaľa a kraj okolo nich — Maďarsku a nová hranica viedla pár desiatok kilometrov južne odtiaľto. Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944 a koncom októbra ho potlačili; boje sa potom presunuli presne do takéhoto kraja: hlboké lesy, planina, ktorú sa nedalo prehľadať, a dediny, ktoré partizánov živili. Odveta prišla v decembri 1944 — dvanástich mužov z Muráňa za pomoc partizánom zastrelili. V zime, ktorá nasledovala, dorazil do tohto kúta Gemera front.

The Coburg estate was confiscated in 1945 and the forests, the sawmills and the horses became state property. For the ruin itself the communist decades meant first neglect and then a modest kind of rescue: the site was cleared out in 1972, and from 1980 the necessary maintenance was done year by year — capping the tops of walls so water could not get into them, propping what was falling, keeping the path open. This is how most Slovak ruins actually survived the twentieth century. Not one grand restoration with a ribbon to cut, but a few people with hand tools walking up the hill again in the spring.

  8. 1 October 1997 · the 2000s1. október 1997 · prvé desaťročie 21. storočia A national park, and horses instead of a garrisonNárodný park a kone namiesto posádky

On 1 October 1997 the plateau became the Muránska planina National Park — 203 square kilometres of karst tableland, with a buffer zone almost as large again. That turned the castle's whole meaning inside out. For seven hundred years this rock was valuable because it was hard to get to; now the same emptiness is valuable because emptiness has become rare. Conservation went on, the gate was rebuilt and viewing platforms put in during the 2000s, and most people who make the climb today come as much for the plateau as for the walls: karst meadows, flowers that grow on this limestone and almost nowhere else, and the semi-wild horses that are the park's emblem. Watch them from a distance and do not feed them — they are not tame.1. októbra 1997 sa z planiny stal Národný park Muránska planina — 203 kilometrov štvorcových krasovej tabule a ochranné pásmo takmer takej istej rozlohy.
