In 1644, during yet another rising against the Habsburgs, Muráň was held for the rebel side by Mária Séčiová, a widow who ran the whole estate herself. The imperial commander sent to take it, František Vešeléni, worked out that the crag made a storm impossible — so, tradition says, the two arranged for ladders to go up the rock at night at an agreed place, and the castle changed sides without a battle. The night escalade is a tradition rather than a documented military report; the outcome is not in doubt. Vešeléni took Muráň in 1644, the two married, and a later poet named her the Venus of Muráň. Twenty years on he was leading the magnates' conspiracy of 1666 against Emperor Leopold I. He died before it was discovered; when it broke, imperial troops occupied the castle in 1670, the estates were confiscated, and Mária ended her life in confinement far from the plateau.
