In the summer of 1644, Muráň was held for the anti-Habsburg side by Mária Séčiová, a widow of formidable reputation who ran the estate herself. The imperial commander charged with taking it was František Vešeléni, and by every account he concluded that the castle could not be stormed — the crag saw to that — but that it might be entered.V lete roku 1644 držala Muráň pre protihabsburskú stranu Mária Séčiová, vdova povestnej povahy, ktorá panstvo spravovala sama.
The tradition, and it is a tradition rather than a documented military report, is that the two were already in correspondence; that Mária arranged for the rock to be climbed at night with ladders at an agreed place; and that the castle changed sides without a battle. What is certain is the outcome. Vešeléni took Muráň in 1644, the pair married, and she is remembered ever after as the Venus of Muráň — the name a later poet gave her, and the one that stuck.
Tradition has it the ladders went up at an agreed hour. The castle that no army could take opened from the inside.
The story did not end well. Vešeléni rose to the highest office in the kingdom and then, in the 1660s, into the conspiracy against the Habsburgs that carries his name. He died before it broke; when it did, the estates were confiscated and Mária Séčiová spent her last years under confinement, far from the plateau. The romance and the ruin belong to the same century — and to a great extent to the same decision.
