History of Fiľakovo CastleDejiny — Fiľakovský hrad

Fiľakovo Castle stands on a blunt neck of basalt in the middle of a border town, and for thirty-nine years in the sixteenth century it was not a Hungarian castle at all but an Ottoman provincial capital. Almost nowhere else in Slovakia does the Turkish frontier run so directly through a single rock.

  1. 2 February 12422. február 1242 The castle first appears in writingHrad sa prvý raz objaví v listine

The first document that names Fiľakovo is dated 2 February 1242 — the winter the Mongol army was riding through the kingdom. Local tradition says the castle held out against them, and the story is repeated everywhere; it rests, though, on that single early mention rather than on any account of a siege. What is certain is the pattern that followed. After the Mongols withdrew, King Béla IV pushed the nobles of Hungary to build in stone and on high rock, and the hills of Novohrad filled with castles. Fiľakovo's basalt neck, sheer on three sides, needed almost no help.

  2. 1311–13211311 – 1321 Matúš Čák takes it, the king takes it backMatúš Čák ho vezme, kráľ ho vezme späť

For a decade the castle belonged to Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the magnate who ran most of what is now western and central Slovakia as though it were his own kingdom, and defied two kings while doing it. After his power collapsed Fiľakovo returned to the crown, and documents of 1348 and 1385 list it as royal property. A royal castle meant a castellan appointed from above rather than a lord who owned the rock — which is exactly why the crown could hand it out again whenever it needed to buy someone's loyalty. Kráľovský hrad znamenal kastelána dosadeného zhora, nie pána, ktorý skalu vlastní — a práve preto ho koruna mohla kedykoľvek znova rozdať, keď si potrebovala kúpiť niečiu vernosť.

  3. 1435–14831435 – 1483 Jiskra's men, then CorvinusJiskrovi vojaci, potom Korvín

In 1435 the castle was pledged to the Perényi family, and in 1440 Queen Elizabeth handed its administration to Ján Jiskra, the Bohemian captain she hired to hold Upper Hungary for her infant son. Jiskra's garrisons — many of them Hussite veterans — held a chain of castles across today's Slovakia for two decades and were the real power here. The account closed in 1483, when the troops of King Matthias Corvinus took Fiľakovo from Štefan Perényi. Every change of hands added masonry: this is the century in which a watchpost grew into a fortress.Roku 1435 dali hrad do zálohy Perényiovcom a v roku 1440 zverila kráľovná Alžbeta jeho správu Jánovi Jiskrovi, českému kapitánovi, ktorého si najala, aby jej maloletému synovi udržal Horné Uhorsko. Jiskrove posádky — mnohí v nich boli husitskí veteráni — držali dve desaťročia celý reťazec hradov na dnešnom Slovensku a boli tu skutočnou mocou. Účet sa uzavrel roku 1483, keď Fiľakovo odobralo Štefanovi Perényimu vojsko kráľa Mateja Korvína. Každá výmena majiteľa pridala kus muriva: práve v tomto storočí vyrástla z pozorovateľne pevnosť.

  4. 1541–15511541 – 1551 The frontier comes northHranica sa posúva na sever

The Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 and the loss of Buda in 1541 cut the Hungarian kingdom into three pieces, and the war frontier stopped a short ride south of this rock. Fiľakovo had come by marriage to Ferenc Bebek, and in 1551 he brought in the Italian engineer Alessandro da Vedano to rebuild it for the age of gunpowder: a new middle ward, new bastions, and a wall thick enough to stand cannon fire. The Bebeks were doing the same thing at Krásna Hôrka, against the same enemy. It was the best fortification money could buy, and it lasted three years. Fiľakovo získal sobášom Ferenc Bebek a roku 1551 povolal talianskeho inžiniera Alessandra da Vedana, aby ho prestaval pre vek pušného prachu: nové stredné nádvorie, nové bašty a múr taký hrubý, aby vydržal delostreľbu. To isté robili Bebekovci v tom čase na Krásnej Hôrke — proti tomu istému nepriateľovi. Bolo to najlepšie opevnenie, aké sa dalo kúpiť, a vydržalo tri roky.

  5. 16 June 155416. jún 1554 Lost in a single dayStratený za jediný deň

Fiľakovo did not fall to a siege. On 16 June 1554 it was lost by a ruse — the sources call it treachery, and the garrison's own carelessness appears in every version of the story — and the strongest new fortress on the frontier changed hands in a day. The town's church was turned into a mosque the same year. Slovak castles are usually remembered for how long they held out. This one is worth remembering for how quickly a wall can stop mattering.

  6. 1554–15931554 – 1593 Thirty-nine years as an Ottoman capitalTridsaťdeväť rokov osmanským sídlom

The Ottomans did not merely garrison Fiľakovo; they governed from it. The castle became the seat of a sanjak — an Ottoman province with a governor called a beg, a garrison and a tax office — and ten begs followed one another on this rock in thirty-nine years, the first of them Hamza. That is most of a working lifetime in which the tax collector who rode into the villages north of here answered to Istanbul. The frontier itself was not a line but a wide, violent belt of raiding and ransom, where villages often paid both empires at once to be left alone.Osmani do Fiľakova nedali iba posádku — vládli odtiaľto.

In the autumn of 1593 the long war between the Habsburgs and the Ottomans opened again, and an imperial army under Christoph von Teuffenbach came up to Fiľakovo; Miklós Pálffy arrived with some seven thousand more men. The Ottoman garrison pulled back into the upper castle and surrendered on 27 November. The frontier rolled south again, the castle was repaired and strengthened, and Nógrád county moved its business up onto the rock. The seventeenth century was the best Fiľakovo ever had.

  8. 22 August – 16 September 168222. august – 16. september 1682 A king proclaimed, a fortress pulled downVyhlásený kráľ, zrúcaná pevnosť

On 22 August 1682 an army of Ottoman troops and kuruc rebels — the anti-Habsburg insurgents of Imrich Thököly — surrounded Fiľakovo. Perhaps four thousand defenders faced a force many times their size, and the garrison surrendered on 10 September. Six days later, inside the captured castle, the Ottoman commander Ibrahim pasha handed Thököly the sultan's charter naming him king of Hungary; Thököly ruled instead as prince of Upper Hungary. Then the Ottomans had the fortress and the town below it demolished, so that neither could be used against them. Everything standing on the rock today is what survived that demolition.Dvadsiateho druhého augusta 1682 obkľúčilo Fiľakovo vojsko Osmanov a kurucov — protihabsburských povstalcov Imricha Tökölyho. Azda štyri tisícky obrancov stáli proti mnohonásobnej presile a posádka 10. septembra kapitulovala.

Nobody rebuilt. Artillery had made this kind of hilltop fortress ruinously expensive, and once the Ottoman frontier moved south for good in the 1680s and 1690s it was also pointless; the county's business went down to the towns of the plain and never came back up. The walls became a quarry and then a curiosity. That is why Fiľakovo is a ruin in the middle of a living town rather than a castle standing above one.Nikto ho neobnovil.

  10. 1944–19511944 – 1951 Archaeologists on the rockArcheológovia na skale

Systematic archaeological work began on the castle rock in 1944, and a regional museum was set up in the town in 1951. What the digging produced is unusual for Slovakia: alongside the medieval material there are finds from the Ottoman decades — the everyday leavings of a garrison that lived here for thirty-nine years. Most Slovak castles can only tell you about the Turkish wars. This one can show you the other side of them.

  11. 2007–20082007 – 2008 A museum in the Bebek bastionMúzeum v Bebekovej bašte

The castle museum was founded in 2007 and opened its permanent exhibition in 2008 inside the great Bebek bastion — the one substantial building the demolition left standing, roofed again and put back to work after three hundred years. The exhibition is in Slovak and Hungarian, as the town is, and it treats the Ottoman period as part of the town's own history rather than as an interruption of it.Hradné múzeum vzniklo roku 2007 a v roku 2008 otvorilo stálu expozíciu vo veľkej Bebekovej bašte — v jedinej výraznej stavbe, ktorú búranie nechalo stáť, znovu zastrešenej a po tristo rokoch znovu využitej.
