On 22 August 1682 an army of Ottoman troops and kuruc rebels — the anti-Habsburg insurgents of Imrich Thököly — surrounded Fiľakovo. Perhaps four thousand defenders faced a force many times their size, and the garrison surrendered on 10 September. Six days later, inside the captured castle, the Ottoman commander Ibrahim pasha handed Thököly the sultan's charter naming him king of Hungary; Thököly ruled instead as prince of Upper Hungary. Then the Ottomans had the fortress and the town below it demolished, so that neither could be used against them. Everything standing on the rock today is what survived that demolition.Dvadsiateho druhého augusta 1682 obkľúčilo Fiľakovo vojsko Osmanov a kurucov — protihabsburských povstalcov Imricha Tökölyho. Azda štyri tisícky obrancov stáli proti mnohonásobnej presile a posádka 10. septembra kapitulovala. O šesť dní neskôr odovzdal v dobytom hrade osmanský veliteľ Ibrahim paša Tökölymu sultánovu listinu, ktorá ho menovala uhorským kráľom; Tököly napokon vládol ako knieža Horného Uhorska. Potom dali Osmani pevnosť aj mesto pod ňou zbúrať, aby ich nikto nemohol použiť proti nim. Všetko, čo dnes na skale stojí, prežilo práve toto búranie.
