Fiľakovo is a town castle without being an urban palace: the rock stands in the built-up middle of the town, so you walk to it along streets and then climb it in a few minutes. The ascent is short but genuinely steep, on stone steps and paved ramps, and the castle unfolds as three wards stacked one above the other as the rock narrows.Fiľakovo je mestský hrad bez toho, aby bolo mestským palácom: skala stojí v zastavanom strede mesta, takže k nej prídete po uliciach a potom ju za pár minút vyjdete. The lower ward is the widest and holds the gate defences; the middle ward carries the great round bastion that dominates every photograph of the castle; and the upper ward, on the crown of the rock, is where the medieval core stood and where least survives. From the top the view is not of mountains but of a frontier landscape: low volcanic hills, wide fields, the roofs of Fiľakovo directly below, and the Hungarian border a few kilometres south.
