Slovak castle history is usually told as a story of kings, magnates and Habsburgs. Fiľakovo interrupts it. After the Ottoman victories of the 1520s and 1540s the Hungarian kingdom was cut into three, and the war frontier between the Habsburg north and the Ottoman centre ran — for a while — straight across what is now the southern edge of Slovakia.Dejiny slovenských hradov sa zvyčajne rozprávajú ako príbeh kráľov, magnátov a Habsburgovcov. Fiľakovo tento príbeh preruší. Po osmanských víťazstvách v dvadsiatych a štyridsiatych rokoch šestnásteho storočia sa Uhorské kráľovstvo rozpadlo na tri časti a vojnová hranica medzi habsburským severom a osmanským stredom viedla — na čas — priamo cez dnešný južný okraj Slovenska.
A frontier of that kind was not a line on a map. It was a wide, violent zone of raiding, ransom and double taxation, where villages often paid both sides to be left alone and the garrison towns lived off, and in fear of, one another. Fiľakovo spent thirty-nine years on the southern side of it, as an administrative centre rather than merely an outpost — the Ottoman authorities governed a district from this rock.Takáto hranica nebola čiarou na mape. Bola širokým, násilným pásmom nájazdov, výkupného a dvojitého zdanenia, kde dediny neraz platili obom stranám, aby ich nechali na pokoji, a posádkové mestá žili jedno z druhého i v strachu jedno z druhého. Fiľakovo strávilo tridsaťdeväť rokov na jeho južnej strane, a to ako správne centrum, nie iba ako výspa — osmanská moc z tejto skaly spravovala celý okres.

The frontier moved on, as frontiers do, and the memory of it faded far faster in the north than the fortification programme it triggered — every round artillery bastion on a castle between here and the Spiš is a response to it.
