The Ottoman victory at Mohács in 1526 and the loss of Buda in 1541 cut the Hungarian kingdom into three pieces, and the war frontier stopped a short ride south of this rock. Fiľakovo had come by marriage to Ferenc Bebek, and in 1551 he brought in the Italian engineer Alessandro da Vedano to rebuild it for the age of gunpowder: a new middle ward, new bastions, and a wall thick enough to stand cannon fire. The Bebeks were doing the same thing at Krásna Hôrka, against the same enemy.
