History of Turčianske TepliceDejiny — Turčianske Teplice

Turčianske Teplice is where it is because hot water comes out of the ground at the southern end of the Turiec basin, right where the road starts climbing over the pass towards the gold-mining town of Kremnica. For most of its history the place was not a town at all but a bath that belonged to somebody else — a count, then the burghers of Kremnica, then the state. The town was only assembled around the springs in the twentieth century, out of the spa settlement and the villages next door.Turčianske Teplice stoja tam, kde stoja, lebo na južnom konci Turčianskej kotliny vyviera horúca voda a hneď za ňou stúpa cesta cez sedlo do zlatokopeckej Kremnice. Väčšinu svojich dejín to nebolo mesto, ale kúpeľ, ktorý patril niekomu inému — najprv grófovi, potom kremnickým mešťanom a napokon štátu. Mesto okolo prameňov vzniklo až v 20. storočí spojením kúpeľnej osady so susednými dedinami.

  1. 9th–10th century9. – 10. storočie People here before any documentĽudia tu boli skôr ako listiny

Archaeologists have found a settlement on the ground of the modern town dating from the later hill-fort period — the centuries of Great Moravia and just after it. Nothing written survives from then: no charter names the place, no chronicler mentions the springs. What we have instead is what people left in the soil, dug up and dated by excavation. That gap is worth remembering when you read the next entry, because the first written mention of a place is a fact about a document, not about when people arrived. Zostalo len to, čo ľudia nechali v zemi a čo odkryl a datoval archeologický výskum.

  2. 1241, and a charter of 12811241 a listina z roku 1281 Hot springs given away by a kingKráľ daruje teplé pramene

In 1241 Mongol armies rode through the Kingdom of Hungary and destroyed its army in a single afternoon. Nothing is recorded of what happened in the Turiec itself, but the consequences reached it: King Béla IV rebuilt the kingdom around stone castles and handed out land to men who would hold them, and his successors carried on doing it. In 1281 King Ladislaus IV granted the Háj estate, together with its hot springs, to a Count Peter. That charter is the first time the water under this town appears in writing — which means the springs were already known and worth giving away.V roku 1241 prešli Uhorskom mongolské vojská a kráľovskú armádu rozprášili za jediné popoludnie.

Through the fourteenth century the springs turn up in documents again and again, and every clerk spells them differently: Thopolcha in 1351, Tepliche in 1399, and in 1402 the Latin Therme Thurocienses, “the baths of Turiec”. Behind all of them is the Slavic word teplice, warm waters, which is what the neighbours had always called the place. The basin around it had just become a county of its own: in 1339 Turiec was separated from Zvolen county, with its seat at the castle of Sklabiňa in the hills to the north-east. A county, or župa, was the unit that collected the king's taxes and ran his courts — so from 1339 there was an administration in the basin, and a bath in it.Počas 14. storočia sa pramene v listinách objavujú znova a znova a každý pisár ich zapíše inak: Thopolcha v roku 1351, Tepliche v roku 1399 a v roku 1402 po latinsky Therme Thurocienses, „turčianske kúpele“.

  4. 1412 · 15021412 · 1502 A king takes the cureKráľ sa prišiel liečiť

In 1412 King Sigismund of Luxembourg was treated in the water here. A royal cure was the best advertising a medieval bath could get, and the reputation lasted for centuries. Even so, for a long time there was hardly a building: people bathed in pools cut into the ground beside the springs. The first proper structure over the water was put up in 1502 by a nobleman named Majtényi, and from around then the Latin documents call the place Thermae Stubnenses, the baths of Štubňa — the name the town would carry until after the Second World War.V roku 1412 sa tunajšou vodou liečil kráľ Žigmund Luxemburský.

The Ottoman wars that swallowed the middle of the kingdom never reached the Turiec — the frontier ran far to the south, and what came over the pass instead was money. On 5 September 1533 the free royal mining town of Kremnica, rich from gold, bought the Háj estate with the springs in it, and by 31 August 1535 it owned the estate outright. Kremnica would hold this water for more than four hundred years. It built a new bath in 1549 and the Red-and-White Bath in 1593, and — unusually for the age — opened the water to guests of every rank rather than to nobles alone. V roku 1549 tu postavila nový kúpeľ, v roku 1593 Bielo-červený kúpeľ a — na svoju dobu nezvyčajne — sprístupnila vodu hosťom všetkých stavov, nielen šľachte.

A seventeenth-century description of the springs counts seven separate baths here, divided not by sex but by social rank. Open to everybody did not mean everybody together: you bathed with your own kind, and the water you got depended on who your father was. In 1728 Kremnica added the Green Bath, the building a later rebuilding would turn into the Blue Bath people still swim in. The settlement itself stayed tiny — a census in 1784 found 41 people, and in 1828 there were thirteen houses and 109 inhabitants. This was a bath with a handful of staff, not a town. Samotná osada zostávala maličká — súpis z roku 1784 tu našiel 41 ľudí a v roku 1828 tu stálo trinásť domov so 109 obyvateľmi. Bol to kúpeľ s hŕstkou personálu, nie mesto.

In 1872 the railway from Vrútky to Zvolen was completed, running the length of the basin and over the pass past the springs. It changed everything. A bath that had drawn guests from the neighbouring counties could now draw them from anywhere in Austria-Hungary, and the hotels around the park were built for those trains. In 1884–85 the Green Bath of 1728 was rebuilt as a polygonal domed bath house and given the name it still carries, the Modrý kúpeľ or Blue Bath; the thermal water rises into its round pool from below, through a grating in the floor. Officially the place was now Stubnyafürdő — Hungarian was the language of the state, and Slovak names were disappearing from maps and signs.V roku 1872 dokončili železnicu z Vrútok do Zvolena, ktorá vedie celou kotlinou a cez sedlo popri prameňoch. Zmenilo to všetko.

Between 1914 and 1918 the men of the Turiec were conscripted into the Austro-Hungarian army and sent to fronts none of them had chosen. The one thing built here in those years turned out to matter for the rest of the century: Leopold Lichtenstein raised a steam mill on the fields between the villages of Vieska and Diviaky. Out of that mill grew the woodworking works later known as Drevina, the town's largest employer apart from the baths. In 1918 the empire that had done the conscripting collapsed, and the Turiec became part of Czechoslovakia.V rokoch 1914 – 1918 narukovali muži z Turca do rakúsko-uhorskej armády a bojovali na frontoch, ktoré si nevybrali.

In 1920 the Hungarian Stubnyafürdő was replaced by a Slovak name, Štubňanské Teplice. The spa was rebuilt for a republic's customers: in 1925 the oldest stone bath, the Kamennica, was pulled down and a Grand Hotel put up in its place, and the main road through the town was finally paved in 1934. The town's most famous son belongs to these years too. Mikuláš Galanda, born here on 4 May 1895, became with Ľudovít Fulla one of the two founders of modern Slovak painting; together they published the Private Letters of Fulla and Galanda, a manifesto for an art that would be modern and Slovak at once. He died in Bratislava on 5 June 1938, aged forty-three.V roku 1920 vystriedal maďarské Stubnyafürdő slovenský názov Štubňanské Teplice.

By 1944 the Slovak State had moved the main headquarters of its gendarmerie — the state police — to this town. When the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, that headquarters joined it, and the police command of a whole country went over to the insurgents. Turčianske Teplice became the seat of a Revolutionary National Committee and of an insurgent military hospital. The Turiec was one of the heartlands of the rising; when German units forced their way into the basin that autumn the fighters withdrew into the Veľká Fatra, and the reprisals fell on the villages under the hills — the castle at Sklabiňa was burnt out and has been a ruin ever since. The town was liberated on 8 April 1945, was later awarded the Commemorative Medal of the Slovak National Uprising, and keeps its monument to the fallen and to the victims of the rising below the hill called Bôr.V roku 1944 sídlilo v meste hlavné veliteľstvo žandárstva Slovenského štátu — teda vedenie štátnej polície. Mesto oslobodili 8. apríla 1945, neskôr dostalo Pamätnú medailu SNP a pomník padlým a obetiam povstania mu stojí pod vrchom Bôr.

First the repairs: the railway south to Banská Bystrica, wrecked in the last months of the war, reopened on 1 March 1946. Then, on 20 February 1949, Kremnica gave up the rights it had held over these springs since 1533, and the baths passed to the Czechoslovak state spas. Under the new system a spa stay was not a holiday but a course of treatment — assessed by a doctor, prescribed, paid for by the health service and measured in weeks. The town itself was put together in the same years: Vieska joined in 1949, Diviaky with its railway station in 1952, Turčiansky Michal in 1971, and the place was a district seat from 1949 to 1960. Somewhere in this period it also took the name it has now, Turčianske Teplice.

Since 1991 Galanda's birth house has held a permanent exhibition of his work, and in July 1996 Turčianske Teplice became a district seat for the third time in its history, after 1880–1923 and 1949–60. The spa was privatised and rebuilt for two kinds of customer at once: patients sent for weeks of prescribed treatment, and families who come for an afternoon in the thermal pools. A restoration in 2017 joined the Blue Bath to the hotel next to it, and it is marketed today under a newer name, the Golden Bath. The older name is still the one that means something. What has not changed is the water: it comes out of the ground hot, it never needs heating, and it is the only reason there is a town here at all.
