In 1412 King Sigismund of Luxembourg was treated in the water here. A royal cure was the best advertising a medieval bath could get, and the reputation lasted for centuries. Even so, for a long time there was hardly a building: people bathed in pools cut into the ground beside the springs. The first proper structure over the water was put up in 1502 by a nobleman named Majtényi, and from around then the Latin documents call the place Thermae Stubnenses, the baths of Štubňa — the name the town would carry until after the Second World War.V roku 1412 sa tunajšou vodou liečil kráľ Žigmund Luxemburský. Kráľovská kúra bola pre stredoveký kúpeľ tou najlepšou reklamou a povesť miestu vydržala stáročia. Napriek tomu tu dlho takmer nič nestálo: ľudia sa kúpali v jamách vyhĺbených priamo v zemi pri prameňoch. Prvú skutočnú stavbu nad vodou dal v roku 1502 postaviť šľachtic Majtényi a približne odvtedy sa v latinských listinách miesto volá Thermae Stubnenses, štubnianske kúpele — meno, ktoré si mesto ponesie až za druhú svetovú vojnu.
