Turčianske Teplice sits at the southern end of the Turiec basin, about twenty kilometres south of Martin, where the basin narrows towards the pass into the Kremnica hills. The Veľká Fatra rises to the east, the Žiar range to the west, and the Kremnické vrchy close the way south.Turčianske Teplice ležia na južnom konci Turčianskej kotliny, asi dvadsať kilometrov južne od Martina, tam, kde sa kotlina zužuje k sedlu do kremnických vrchov. The storyHistória
The springs have been used since the Middle Ages, and the settlement was a bath long before it was a town: guests came from the counties around, and the buildings that went up around the water were bath houses first and everything else afterwards.Pramene sa využívajú od stredoveku a osada bola kúpeľom dávno predtým, než sa stala mestom: hostia prichádzali z okolitých stolíc a stavby, ktoré okolo vody vyrastali, boli najprv kúpeľnými domami a až potom čímkoľvek iným.
Mikuláš Galanda was born here in 1895 and became, with Ľudovít Fulla of Ružomberok, one of the two founders of Slovak modern painting; the pair published a set of manifestos together in the early 1930s that argued for a modern art rooted in folk form. The town gallery carries his name.V roku 1895 sa tu narodil Mikuláš Galanda, ktorý sa spolu s Ľudovítom Fullom z Ružomberka stal jedným z dvoch zakladateľov slovenskej modernej maľby; začiatkom tridsiatych rokov spolu vydali sériu manifestov obhajujúcich moderné umenie vyrastajúce z ľudového tvaru. The town's fortunes have always followed the road south. The pass towards Kremnica carried the traffic between the Turiec and the mining towns of the Hron, and the railway was later laid along the same line; guests reached the baths by it from across the monarchy in the decades before the First World War, and the older hotels around the park were built for them.Osudy mesta vždy sledovali cestu na juh. The spa quarter and its park are the town. The historic bath known as the Blue Bath — a tiled thermal pool under a nineteenth-century roof, for most of its life reserved for women — is still in use rather than fenced off as a monument, and modern pools stand alongside the old bath houses.Mestom sú kúpeľná štvrť a jej park. The Galanda gallery is the other indoor stop. Outside the town, the small villages of the Turiec keep manor houses and wooden belfries out of proportion to their size, the western valleys of the Veľká Fatra are within reach on foot, and Kremnica — the medieval gold-mining town with its mint still working — is over the pass to the south.Druhou zastávkou pod strechou je Galandova galéria. Water aside, what makes a second day worth it is the Turiec itself: a shallow farmed basin ringed by high ground, with marked trails running east into the limestone valleys of the Veľká Fatra and west into the quieter Žiar hills. Trains from Martin and Vrútky run south through the town towards Kremnica, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica, and the same corridor carries the main road over the pass.
