Krásno is the eldest of the Kysuce towns and the last of them to be called one. It is written down in 1325, two hundred and forty years before Čadca, and the ground Čadca now stands on was once under Krásno's jurisdiction. Then Čadca grew, took the district and the offices, and Krásno went back to being a large village at a river junction. It became a town again only in 2001. What carried it through all of that — the centuries of grazing, the sawmill, the narrow-gauge railway, the dam — is timber. Cez to všetko ho prenieslo drevo: stáročia pasenia, píla, úzkokoľajka, priehrada.

Krásno appears in writing for the first time in 1325, as Krasna — the oldest recorded settlement in the Kysuce valley itself. It was held first by the hereditary judge of Žilina, then by the town of Žilina after the judges gave up their rights, and later by the Strečno estate. Its jurisdiction reached a long way upstream, which is why the ground that later became Čadca was for a time administered from here. The name follows the documents down the centuries — Crassna in 1352, Krasno in 1508, Kysucké Krásno by 1808 — and the modern form Krásno nad Kysucou was fixed only in 1920. Two estates, Strečno and Budatín, spent generations arguing over who owned this stretch of valley, which tells you the forests here were already worth arguing about.
Through the sixteenth century the Kysuce was settled by herders moving west along the Carpathian ridges under Wallachian law, a lighter set of dues paid in sheep and cheese rather than grain — the only arrangement that made sense on ground where grain does not ripen reliably. The first Kysuce village recorded as founded on that law is Klubina in 1535, and after it the side valleys filled fast. By 1598 Krásno had 253 families and about 1,420 inhabitants, which for a mountain settlement a century out from empty forest is a great many people. They lived on sheep, on cattle, on small patches of oats and potatoes, and above all on wood. Nothing here was ever fought over by armies; what shaped this century was an axe and a flock.Počas šestnásteho storočia osídľovali Kysuce pastieri postupujúci karpatskými hrebeňmi na západ podľa valaského práva — miernejších povinností odvádzaných ovcami a syrom namiesto obilia, čo bolo jediné rozumné riešenie tam, kde obilie spoľahlivo nedozrieva. Žili z oviec, z dobytka, z malých políčok ovsa a zemiakov — a predovšetkým z dreva.
Late in the eighteenth century Franciscan friars came out from Žilina to serve the valley, and the institutions of a proper village followed in a revealing order. Father Arkádius Nadhoránsky had a parsonage built in 1794; the first market was held in 1795; a permanent parish priest arrived only in 1799. Building the house before there was anyone to live in it is exactly how a poor place gets an institution — you make the offer physical and then wait for someone to accept it. These were the decades of Maria Theresa's and Joseph II's reforms, when the state was counting its subjects, writing down their obligations and pushing schooling and record-keeping into villages that had never had either. For Krásno the practical result was that it stopped being only a cluster of farms and started being an address.Koncom osemnásteho storočia prišli do doliny slúžiť františkáni zo Žiliny a inštitúcie poriadnej dediny pribúdali v poradí, ktoré veľa prezrádza. Páter Arkádius Nadhoránsky dal v roku 1794 postaviť faru, prvý trh sa konal v roku 1795 a stály farár prišiel až v roku 1799.
In 1871 the Košice–Bohumín railway came up the valley and Krásno got a station of its own, which for a timber village is worth more than a town hall: logs could now leave in quantity and go anywhere the network went. In 1895 the municipality built a sawmill employing about fifty people, and that mill is the foundation of everything the town has done for a living since. The other export was people. This was the peak of the emigration to the United States — roughly 500,000 Slovaks between 1880 and the mid-1920s, more than half of them to Pennsylvania — and men from villages like this one went to the coal and the steel mills meaning to buy land when they came home. Some did. Many sent for their families instead, and the hamlets on the ridges above Krásno lost households that were never replaced.V roku 1871 prišla dolinou Košicko-bohumínska železnica a Krásno získalo vlastnú stanicu, čo pre drevársku obec znamená viac než radnicu: klady mohli odchádzať vo veľkom a dostať sa všade, kam siahala sieť.
The railway through the village was doubled in 1914, the last piece of peacetime work before the war took everything else. Thirty men of Krásno were killed in the First World War, out of a population of a few thousand — and the families they left behind had to hire themselves out to better-off neighbours to eat. One name is remembered separately: Vincent Čimbora, who was executed at Kragujevac in Serbia after the mutiny of 2 June 1918, when Slovak soldiers refused to be sent back to the front and were court-martialled and shot. He was killed by the army he had been conscripted into, in a country he had no quarrel with, four months before that army's empire ceased to exist. Villages like this one supplied the Habsburg army's infantry, and the bill came to the same few hundred houses every time.V roku 1914 zdvojkoľajnili trať vedúcu obcou — posledný kus mierovej práce predtým, než vojna vzala všetko ostatné. Zabila ho armáda, do ktorej ho odviedli, v krajine, s ktorou nemal spor, štyri mesiace pred zánikom ríše, ktorej tá armáda patrila. Práve takéto dediny dodávali habsburskej armáde pechotu — a účet vždy prišiel tým istým pár stovkám domov.
The interwar republic reaches a village like this as a list of small, dated arrivals, and Krásno's list is worth reading in order: the name fixed as Krásno nad Kysucou in 1920, a gendarmerie post the same year, a volunteer fire brigade and a Sokol gymnastics club in 1925, electricity through the whole village in 1928, a food co-operative in 1930. By 1938 there were 3,563 people living in 577 houses. None of that is dramatic and all of it is the point: this is what a state actually looks like when it reaches a mountain village — a light switch, a fire pump, a shop you own a share of. It also has to be said that the same twenty years brought very little work, and that the American door had closed. Nič z toho nie je dramatické a práve o to ide: takto vyzerá štát, keď dorazí do horskej dediny — vypínač, hasičská striekačka, obchod, v ktorom máte podiel.
From March 1939 the village belonged to the Slovak State, a client of Nazi Germany. When the Slovak National Uprising broke out in August 1944 and German forces occupied the country, troops took over the school building in Krásno and put artillery and tanks about the village. The forests behind the town, up the Bystrica valley, were partisan ground, and holding a road junction like this one mattered to whoever was trying to control the valley. The fighting ended with the Red Army coming up from Žilina at the very end of April 1945; the war in Europe was formally over on 9 May.Od marca 1939 patrila obec Slovenskému štátu, klientovi nacistického Nemecka. Keď v auguste 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie a krajinu obsadili nemecké jednotky, vojaci v Krásne zabrali budovu školy a po obci rozostavili delá a tanky.
Up the Bystrica valley behind the town ran a narrow-gauge forest railway, built to bring logs down from the watershed, and in the 1920s it was joined across the ridge to the forest system on the Orava side. To climb the last stretch to the Beskyd saddle at 935 metres without tunnels or spirals, the engineers used switchbacks: the train runs up a dead-end leg of track, stops, changes direction and climbs the next leg, gaining height in a zigzag staircase up the hillside. Lorries and forest roads made all of it uneconomic, and logging traffic ended around 1970. About eleven kilometres over the saddle were saved, and today the line is a national cultural monument worked by steam between Vychylovka and Tanečník — one of very few switchback railways left anywhere in the world. It survived for an unromantic reason: it closed late enough that there were still people who thought the loss would matter, and who were willing to do the work themselves.
At the head of the same Bystrica valley the state built a dam. The Nová Bystrica reservoir was constructed between 1983 and 1989, and to make room for it two upland villages had to go: Riečnica, which was joined to Nová Bystrica in 1981 and abolished as a settlement in 1985, and Harvelka. Their people were moved out and their houses came down, and the water covers the fields where they stood. This is the trade the twentieth century made all over Slovakia — Orava had done the same thing forty years earlier — and it is worth being honest that it was a real loss to real families, not just an engineering decision. The reservoir now supplies drinking water to much of the Kysuce and to Žilina, which is why nobody is allowed to swim in it.V závere tej istej Bystrickej doliny postavil štát priehradu. Vodnú nádrž Nová Bystrica stavali v rokoch 1983 až 1989 a museli jej ustúpiť dve horské obce: Riečnica, ktorú v roku 1981 pripojili k Novej Bystrici a v roku 1985 ako sídlo zrušili, a Harvelka.
On 1 September 2001 Krásno nad Kysucou was given the status of a town, on the same day as Šaštín-Stráže at the other end of Slovakia. The place first written down in 1325 had waited a long time for the title, and it arrived at a moment when what a small Slovak town does had changed completely: the sawmills, board and pallet works and joinery shops are still here, but a large share of the working population now drives out in the morning — to the bearing works at Kysucké Nové Mesto, to the car plant at Teplička nad Váhom, into Žilina. The motorway is being pushed up the valley in stages along the same line as the river and the railway. Behind the town the side valley has become the reason people drive in rather than out: the open-air museum, the steam trains, the reservoir. A timber town that has learned to sell the forest twice, once as boards and once as a view.
