The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, and Žilina was on the wrong side of the line: German troops occupied the town at once and used it as the base from which they pushed east. The insurgents tried to stop them in the Strečno gorge, twelve kilometres up the valley, and held it from 31 August to 3 September before losing it. The war then sat on this region for eight more months. Žilina was taken on 30 April 1945 by Czechoslovak and Soviet troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front, and the Čáky family, owners of Budatín since 1798, left that year and did not come back.
