In 1786 Emperor Joseph II settled German farmers and craftsmen here, part of a policy of moving people into thinly-populated and under-farmed land across the monarchy. From then on there were two Diószegs side by side: the larger Hungarian one, Magyardiószeg, and the smaller German one, Németdiószeg. They stayed two separate villages for more than a century and a half, and the split explains a good deal about the town — including why one of the two halves would vanish in a single year in 1946.Roku 1786 sem cisár Jozef II. priviedol nemeckých roľníkov a remeselníkov — bola to súčasť politiky, ktorá presúvala ľudí do riedko osídlených a slabo obrobených končín monarchie. Odvtedy tu boli dva Diószegy vedľa seba: väčší maďarský Magyardiószeg a menší nemecký Németdiószeg. Ako dve samostatné obce vydržali vyše poldruha storočia a to rozdelenie vysvetľuje o meste dosť veľa — aj to, prečo jedna z tých dvoch polovíc roku 1946 v priebehu jediného roka zmizne.
