The regime fell in November 1989, and on 9 March 1990 the Salesians walked back into Šaštín after forty years away. In April 1990, flying to Bratislava, John Paul II had his aircraft circle the basilica in salute; five years later, on 1 July 1995, he came in person. For a place whose entire history is about people making a journey to it, having the pope make that journey was the strongest possible statement that the shrine had come through the twentieth century intact — and that in a free country the crowds no longer needed anybody's permission.Režim padol v novembri 1989 a 9. marca 1990 sa saleziáni po štyridsiatich rokoch vrátili do Šaštína. V apríli 1990 dal Ján Pavol II. pri lete do Bratislavy obletieť baziliku na pozdrav; o päť rokov neskôr, 1. júla 1995, prišiel osobne. Pre miesto, ktorého celé dejiny sú o ľuďoch vydávajúcich sa naň na cestu, bola pápežova cesta najsilnejším možným vyhlásením, že svätyňa prešla dvadsiatym storočím neporušená — a že v slobodnej krajine už zástupy nepotrebujú nikoho povolenie.
