Through the Middle Ages Šaštín was the head of its own lordship — an estate with a fortified seat at its centre and villages beneath it. Stráže, a short way off, was a completely separate village with its own name and its own people, and it stayed separate for the next seven hundred years. The castle at Šaštín is hard to date because it was rebuilt so often; the three-winged building that came out of all that rebuilding belongs to the early seventeenth century. Note what it is: a manor house on a wet plain, not a fortress on a crag.
