After the communist takeover of 1948 the factories were nationalised and the Erdődy estate, seized in 1945, went into institutional use. In April 1950 the state closed the monasteries across Czechoslovakia in a single operation, and the Franciscans were removed from the friary they had held since 1467. What replaced the old economy was a set of large state works: the pharmaceutical plant that traded for decades as Slovakofarma, and beside it a wire mill, a clothing works and a cosmetics factory. They pulled people in from the villages, so a town of about 7,000 in 1900 had roughly 25,000 inhabitants by 1990, and it absorbed Svätý Peter in 1953 and Šulekovo in 1980.Po komunistickom prevrate roku 1948 továrne znárodnili a erdődyovské panstvo, zabrané už roku 1945, prešlo do rúk inštitúcií. V apríli 1950 štát jednou akciou zrušil kláštory v celom Československu a františkánov vyviedli z kláštora, v ktorom sídlili od roku 1467. Starú ekonomiku nahradili veľké štátne podniky: farmaceutický závod, ktorý desaťročia niesol meno Slovakofarma, a vedľa neho drôtovňa, odevný závod a kozmetika. Priťahovali ľudí z dedín: mesto, ktoré malo roku 1900 asi 7 000 obyvateľov, ich okolo roku 1990 rátalo už zhruba 25 000. Roku 1953 k sebe pripojilo Svätý Peter a roku 1980 Šulekovo.
