Archaeologists have found traces of settlement at Čachtice from the Neolithic, the age of the first farmers, and then in layers above it from the Copper and Bronze Ages, the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, the Roman centuries and the early Slavic ones. That is not a list of names to memorise; it is a single fact repeated many times over. A place where a valley out of the hills meets the wide corridor of the Váh, with south-facing slopes above and water below, has been worth living in for thousands of years, and every people who arrived here worked that out for themselves. So when the first charter finally names Čachtice in the thirteenth century, it is not recording a new village. It is recording an old one that has just become important enough to write down.Archeológovia našli v Čachticiach stopy osídlenia z neolitu, teda z čias prvých roľníkov, a nad nimi vo vrstvách aj z eneolitu a doby bronzovej, z halštatskej a laténskej doby, z rímskeho obdobia i z čias prvých Slovanov. Nie je to zoznam mien na memorovanie, ale jeden jediný fakt zopakovaný mnohokrát. Miesto, kde dolina z kopcov ústi do širokého považského koridoru, s južnými svahmi nad sebou a s vodou pod sebou, sa oplatilo obývať celé tisícročia a každý ľud, ktorý sem prišiel, na to prišiel sám. Keď teda v trinástom storočí Čachtice konečne pomenuje prvá listina, nezapisuje novú dedinu. Zapisuje starú, ktorá práve zosilnela natoľko, že sa oplatilo spomenúť ju.
