In the autumn of 1918 Austria-Hungary fell apart and Čachtice found itself in Czechoslovakia, a new country governed from Prague, whose offices and schools now worked in Slovak instead of Hungarian. Nothing about the village moved, but almost everything around it did: a different county administration, a different capital, a different currency, and a land reform passed in 1919 that opened the great estates of the old nobility to redistribution. For a wine village the important changes were duller and bigger — a Czechoslovak market to sell into, state railways down in the valley, and a currency that held its value through the 1920s. The interwar republic was also the first state most people here had lived in that held genuinely free elections. Pre vinohradnícku obec boli podstatné zmeny nudnejšie a väčšie — československý trh, na ktorý sa dalo predávať, štátne železnice dolu v doline a mena, ktorá si cez dvadsiate roky držala hodnotu. Prvá republika bola zároveň prvým štátom, v akom väčšina tunajších ľudí žila, kde sa konali naozaj slobodné voľby. Vydržala dvadsať rokov.
