Slovakia became an independent state on 1 January 1993, and Čachtice entered it as what it still is: a working village of some three and a half thousand people, with vineyards on the slopes and a famous ruin above them. Cooperative land went back into private hands through the 1990s, slowly and messily, and the wine trade rebuilt itself as small family cellars rather than one large producer. The castle, closed for years as unsafe, was consolidated in the early 2010s and reopened to visitors in 2014; the coaches now come from Easter to autumn. That is an odd thing to live on, because the village's share of the tourist money rests on a story most of which was invented in the eighteenth century about a woman who was never brought to trial. The honest version — a real investigation, real victims, real politics and four hundred years of embroidery on top — is more interesting than the legend, and it is the only one Čachtice can actually defend.Prvého januára 1993 vznikla samostatná Slovenská republika a Čachtice do nej vstúpili ako to, čím sú dodnes: pracujúca obec s asi tri a pol tisíc obyvateľmi, s vinicami na svahoch a so slávnou zrúcaninou nad nimi. Družstevná pôda sa cez deväťdesiate roky pomaly a komplikovane vracala do súkromných rúk a vinárstvo sa obnovilo skôr ako sieť malých rodinných pivníc než ako jeden veľký podnik. Hrad, roky zatvorený pre nebezpečenstvo úrazu, začiatkom druhej dekády tohto storočia zakonzervovali a v roku 2014 znovu sprístupnili; zájazdy sem odvtedy chodia od Veľkej noci do jesene. Je to zvláštne živobytie, lebo podiel obce na turistických peniazoch stojí na príbehu, ktorý si z väčšej časti vymysleli v osemnástom storočí, a to o žene, ktorú nikdy nepostavili pred súd. Poctivá verzia — skutočné vyšetrovanie, skutočné obete, skutočná politika a štyristo rokov výšiviek navrch — je zaujímavejšia než legenda a je jediná, ktorú Čachtice naozaj obhája.
