Čachtice lie on the western edge of the Váh plain between Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Piešťany, below the last limestone ridges of the Little Carpathians. Vineyards climb the south-facing slopes behind the houses, and the castle ruin is on the crest above, half an hour or so on foot.Čachtice ležia na západnom okraji považskej roviny medzi Novým Mestom nad Váhom a Piešťanmi, pod poslednými vápencovými hrebeňmi Malých Karpát. The site is where a valley out of the hills meets the corridor of the Váh, and the estate that grew around it was one of the largest in this stretch of the valley. The castle held that ground from the thirteenth century, and the village below was its market.Miesto leží tam, kde dolina z kopcov ústi do považského koridoru, a panstvo, ktoré okolo neho vyrástlo, patrilo k najväčším v tomto úseku doliny. In 1610 the estate was administered by the widowed Elizabeth Báthory. At the end of that year an investigation run by the palatine, Juraj Thurzó, ended with several of her servants tried and executed the following year, and Báthory herself confined at Čachtice until she died in 1614. She was never brought to trial. That much is documented.V roku 1610 spravovala panstvo ovdovená Alžbeta Bátoriová. Koncom toho roka sa začalo vyšetrovanie vedené palatínom Jurajom Turzom; skončilo sa tým, že viacerých jej služobníkov v nasledujúcom roku súdili a popravili a samotnú Bátoriovú väznili v Čachticiach až do jej smrti v roku 1614. Pred súd ju nikdy nepostavili. Toľko je doložené.
Almost everything the legend adds — the bathing in blood, the counted hundreds, the walled-up room — appears only in accounts written long afterwards, and historians have argued for decades over how much of the case was crime and how much politics. The climb to the castle goes up through vineyards and oak scrub onto an open limestone crest, the Váh plain on one side and the hills on the other. The ruin has been consolidated over many years and much of it can be walked; it is entirely exposed, and the wind is the real weather up there.Výstup na hrad vedie cez vinice a dubiny na otvorený vápencový hrebeň, s považskou rovinou na jednej strane a kopcami na druhej. The ridge itself is protected: dry limestone grassland with steppe flora that flowers in April and May and is easily trampled off the path. In the hills behind runs the Čachtice cave, a significant karst system that is not a show cave and is closed to the public.Samotný hrebeň je chránený: suché vápencové trávniky so stepnou flórou, ktorá kvitne v apríli a máji a mimo chodníka sa ľahko zošliape. V kopcoch za ním sa tiahne Čachtická jaskyňa, významný krasový systém, ktorý nie je sprístupnený a pre verejnosť je zatvorený.
Living village, not a museumŽivá obec, nie skanzen
Čachtice is an ordinary large village with a famous ruin above it. People live in the houses, work the vines and see coach parties from Easter to autumn. The castle has an admission, a season and staffed hours; the village has none of those, and its museum keeps far shorter hours.Čachtice sú bežnou veľkou obcou so slávnou zrúcaninou nad ňou. Ľudia v domoch bývajú, obrábajú vinice a od Veľkej noci do jesene tu vídajú zájazdy. Hrad má vstupné, sezónu a otváracie hodiny s personálom; obec nič z toho nemá a jej múzeum má hodiny oveľa kratšie.
The wine is a working trade, not a display. Cellars are private unless a producer invites you in, and the vineyard tracks up to the ridge run between other people's rows — stay on them, especially at harvest.Vinárstvo je tu remeslom, nie predstavením. Pivnice sú súkromné, pokiaľ vás vinár sám nepozve, a vinohradnícke cesty na hrebeň vedú pomedzi cudzie rady — držte sa ich, najmä v čase oberačky.

The main Bratislava–Žilina railway runs down the Váh below the village and buses come from Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Piešťany; by car it is a signposted turn west off the road between those towns.
