Building began in 1951, at the height of Stalinism. The plant at Dubnica had by then been renamed the K. J. Voroshilov Works after a Soviet marshal, and the new town was to be called Vorošilov too. It was meant to be the first socialist town in Slovakia and a model of how new people would live: you were to enter along a triumphal road through an arch shaped like a cogwheel, the square was sized for parades and demonstrations, an amphitheatre for thousands was to be cut into the hillside, and nothing in the plan was to remind anyone of religion. There is no church, and that is not an oversight.Stavať sa začalo v roku 1951, v čase vrcholiaceho stalinizmu. Dubnický závod už vtedy niesol meno Závody K. J. Vorošilova podľa sovietskeho maršala a rovnako sa malo volať aj nové mesto – Vorošilov. Malo to byť prvé socialistické mesto na Slovensku a vzor toho, ako budú žiť noví ľudia: vchádzať sa doň malo triumfálnou cestou cez oblúk v tvare ozubeného kolesa, námestie bolo veľké na sprievody a manifestácie, do svahu sa mal vsadiť amfiteáter pre tisíce ľudí a nič v pláne nemalo pripomínať náboženstvo. Kostol tu nie je a nie je to nedopatrenie.
