The Reformation reached this valley in the sixteenth century and took hold: the Gothic church of St Nicholas above the cemetery became a Lutheran church, and a school teaching basic reading and writing was founded in the town at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The Ottoman frontier never reached the Bebrava, but raiding parties did — the town's own account records the Turks plundering Bánovce in 1633. Raiders did not besiege places like this. They arrived fast, burned, took people to sell, and were gone before any relief force could gather, which is why the villages of this valley learned to watch the southern road.Reformácia sa v tejto doline v 16. storočí ujala naplno: gotický Kostol svätého Mikuláša nad cintorínom sa stal evanjelickým a na začiatku 17. storočia tu vznikla škola, ktorá učila základnému čítaniu a písaniu.
