History of ŽehraDejiny — Žehra

Žehra is a village whose church does not stand in it: the church of the Holy Spirit sits alone on a low rise above the houses, facing Spiš Castle across the meadows. It is small, squat and shingled, and inside it holds one of the most complete cycles of medieval wall painting in Slovakia — saved, as it turned out, by the whitewash that was meant to cover it up.Žehra je dedina, ktorej kostol nestojí v dedine: Kostol Ducha Svätého stojí sám na nízkej vyvýšenine nad domami a cez lúky sa díva na Spišský hrad.

  1. the New Stone Age to the migration periodod mladšej doby kamennej po sťahovanie národov What the fields have given upČo vydali polia

Žehra's fields have produced finds from almost every prehistoric period. From the New Stone Age there is pottery of the Linear Pottery culture, the Želiezovce group and the Bükk mountain culture, together with a stone axe and a wedge; from the middle and late Bronze Age, sherds of the Piliny culture; then fragments of Púchov culture pottery and material from the migration period. That is a very long stretch of farming in one small basin. Keep in mind what these finds are, though: potsherds turned up in ploughed ground, not excavated villages — they prove people were here, not how they lived.Polia okolo Žehry vydali nálezy takmer zo všetkých pravekých období. Z mladšej doby kamennej je to keramika kultúry s lineárnou keramikou, želiezovskej skupiny a bukovohorskej kultúry, k tomu kamenná sekera a klin; zo strednej a mladšej doby bronzovej črepy pilinskej kultúry; potom úlomky keramiky púchovskej skupiny a materiál z čias sťahovania národov.

  2. the ninth and tenth centuries9. a 10. storočie Slavic pots by the brookSlovanské hrnce pri potoku

The youngest group of prehistoric finds from Žehra is Slavic pottery of the ninth and tenth centuries, picked up on the banks of the Žehra brook. Those are the centuries of Great Moravia and of the confusion that followed its collapse. It is worth saying no more than the pots actually say: somebody was living and cooking here at the time. No fort, church or estate centre of that period has been found at Žehra, and honest history stops where the evidence does.

  3. 1245–12751245 – 1275 A church built because of the MongolsKostol, ktorý stojí pre Mongolov

In 1245 the Spiš provost Matthew confirmed to the local landowner, Count Ján Sigray, the building of a church with a fortification at Žehra — and that document is also the village's first written mention. The reason is stated plainly in the sources: the Tatar raids of 1241–42 and the wrecked, half-empty countryside they left behind. This is the ordinary pattern of Spiš after the invasion, and it is the exact opposite of the folk story that the Mongols destroyed everything you can see. The church went up between 1245 and 1275 — a single-nave early Gothic building with a polygonal presbytery and a tower added at the end of the century, still Romanesque in its weight: thick walls, small windows, a stone defensive wall around the churchyard, and a late-Romanesque stone font that is still in the nave.V roku 1245 potvrdil spišský prepošt Matej miestnemu zemepánovi, grófovi Jánovi Sigrayovi, výstavbu kostola s opevnením v Žehre — a tá istá listina je zároveň prvou písomnou zmienkou o obci. Kostol postavili v rokoch 1245 – 1275 — jednoloďová ranogotická stavba s polygonálnym záverom presbytéria a s vežou pristavanou koncom storočia, no ťažkosťou ešte románska: hrubé múry, malé okná, kamenný obranný múr okolo cintorína a neskororománska kamenná krstiteľnica, ktorá stojí v lodi dodnes.

Around 1340 a Crucifixion was painted into the tympanum above the south doorway. In 1380 the presbytery was vaulted on a single central pillar, which turned the interior into the two-naved shape typical of Spiš churches. Then, in the last quarter of the fourteenth century, walls and vaults were covered in one coherent programme: a Passion cycle in the presbytery, Christ, the Virgin and Abraham on the vault, the Trinity shown as one figure with three faces, and on the north wall of the nave a Pietà and the picture the church is famous for — the Living Cross, or Tree of Life, in which the cross grows as a living tree with branches, with Adam and Eve at its foot, and the kneeling donor who paid for it all. More painting was added in the fifteenth century.

  5. 1563–16381563 – 1638 Seventy-five years LutheranSedemdesiatpäť rokov evanjelický

The Reformation reached Spiš early and thoroughly, and from 1563 to 1638 the church of the Holy Spirit was Lutheran. Its Catholic paintings stayed on the walls right through those seventy-five years: on Spiš the Protestants did not, on the whole, destroy older images the way it happened in parts of Europe — which is one reason so much medieval art survives in this region. The Sigray family, the village's lords, are still in the floor of their church: their Renaissance memorial slabs are set into it. In 1638 the church returned to Catholic hands, and the estate itself passed to the Csákys, the family that also owned the castle.

  6. 16521652 The whitewash that saved everythingVápno, ktoré všetko zachránilo

In 1652 the interior was brought up to date in the Baroque taste — new altars, a new pulpit — and the medieval wall paintings were limewashed over. It was not vandalism; it was fashion, and it is the single luckiest thing that ever happened to this building. Under a coat of lime, paint stops fading, stops flaking and stops being scrubbed, cleaned and repainted by each new generation. Everything a visitor comes to Žehra to see survives because for more than two hundred years nobody could see it.V roku 1652 upravili interiér podľa barokového vkusu — nové oltáre, nová kazateľnica — a stredoveké nástenné maľby zabielili vápnom.

  7. 1702 · 17801702 · 1780 The lords move to HodkovcePáni sa sťahujú do Hodkoviec

In 1702 Štefan Csáky built a manor house at Hodkovce, directly under the castle hill and inside Žehra's own municipality, with a chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damian and the family crypt beside it. This was the same movement that emptied the fortress above: the family wanted a warm, comfortable house in the valley, not a cold one on a rock, and they took carved stone from the castle to build with. In 1780 Emanuel Csáky rebuilt the manor substantially — the very year fire took the roofs off the castle. From then on the great house of the district was down here in Žehra, and the castle was scenery.V roku 1702 postavil Štefan Čáki v Hodkovciach — priamo pod hradným kopcom a v chotári Žehry — kaštieľ a vedľa neho kaplnku svätých Kozmu a Damiána s rodovou kryptou.

  8. 1810–18701810 – 1870 Uncovered, a little at a timeOdkrývané kúsok po kúsku

The manor at Hodkovce got its classicist face between 1810 and 1820, a north wing in 1860, and the chapel beside it its neo-Gothic look in 1855. Then, from 1870, the limewash in the church began to come off and the medieval paintings started coming back into the light — gradually, over decades, not in one campaign. This was the same generation that was beginning to take Spiš's monuments seriously; in 1865 the imperial commission in Vienna had turned its attention to the castle on the hill. What emerged at Žehra turned out to be not a fragment here and there but most of an interior.Kaštieľ v Hodkovciach dostal klasicistickú fasádu v rokoch 1810 – 1820, severné krídlo v roku 1860 a kaplnka vedľa neho neogotickú podobu v roku 1855.

  9. 19451945 The war, and the end of the CsákysVojna a koniec Čákiovcov

The front crossed Spiš in the winter of 1944–45. In 1945 the property of the Csáky family — the castle standing in Žehra's own cadastre, and the manor at Hodkovce — was confiscated, and three hundred years of one family's ownership ended in a single year.V zime 1944 – 1945 prešiel cez Spiš front.

  10. 1956–19591956 – 1959 Restored, and a village of three partsReštaurované — a dedina z troch častí

Between 1956 and 1959 the wall paintings were restored, and that campaign is why the church looks the way it does to a visitor today. The manor at Hodkovce, taken from the Csákys, went into institutional use and has stayed in it — a building to look at from the road, not a museum you can enter. The village itself changed shape in these decades: of Žehra's three parts — the old village, Hodkovce and the settlement below the Dreveník hill — the settlement grew into much the largest, and about three quarters of the municipality's people live there now. The listed church on its rise and the streets below it have had very different histories.V rokoch 1956 – 1959 nástenné maľby zreštaurovali a práve tejto akcii vďačí kostol za podobu, ktorú dnes návštevník vidí.

  11. 11 December 199311. decembra 1993 World Heritage, still a parishSvetové dedičstvo — a stále farnosť

On 11 December 1993, in Cartagena, the church of the Holy Spirit was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with Spiš Castle, Spišská Kapitula and Spišské Podhradie, as one cultural landscape; Levoča was added to the same inscription in 2009. Žehra's is the only village church in that group, and the only part of it that is still an ordinary working parish church rather than a monument you buy a ticket for. A custodian opens it in the warmer half of the year and there is an admission charge; outside the season it is locked, so anyone travelling specifically for the paintings should confirm the arrangements first. And one last oddity of the map: the castle everyone photographs from Spišské Podhradie stands, cadastrally, in this village.11. decembra 1993 zapísali v Cartagene Kostol Ducha Svätého do Zoznamu svetového dedičstva UNESCO spolu so Spišským hradom, Spišskou Kapitulou a Spišským Podhradím ako jednu kultúrnu krajinu; Levoča pribudla do toho istého zápisu v roku 2009.
