Bardejov, like most of the free royal towns of Upper Hungary, went over to the Lutheran Reformation in the sixteenth century, and the villages it owned went with it; for a long stretch the church at Hervartov served a Protestant congregation and its inside was rearranged to suit. A survey of 1600 sets down exactly what the village then was: twenty-one occupied serf houses, the house of the reeve, a wooden church, a parsonage and a school. That wooden church in the list is the one still standing today — the first time it appears in a document, already more than a century old.Bardejov prešiel v 16. storočí, ako väčšina slobodných kráľovských miest Horného Uhorska, na luteránsku reformáciu a s ním aj dediny, ktoré vlastnil; kostol v Hervartove tak dlhý čas slúžil evanjelickej cirkevnej obci a jeho vnútro sa tomu prispôsobilo. Súpis z roku 1600 presne hovorí, čím vtedy dedina bola: dvadsaťjeden obývaných poddanských domov, dom richtára, drevený kostol, fara a škola. Ten drevený kostol zo zoznamu je ten, čo tu stojí dodnes — prvý raz sa objavuje v listine, keď mal už vyše sto rokov.
