This is where the usual story about Slovak castles goes wrong. Brekov was not wrecked by the Turks — the Ottoman frontier never came anywhere near upper Zemplín. In the 1550s its owner, František Kendy, joined the noble opposition to the Habsburg king Ferdinand I. In 1558 the royal army took the castle and pulled it down. Seventeen years later, in 1575, a later owner, Mikuláš Drugeth, repaired and rebuilt it. Remember the shape of that: the war that ruined this castle was a war between the king and his own nobility.Práve tu sa obvyklý príbeh o slovenských hradoch láme. Brekov nezničili Turci — osmanská hranica sa k hornému Zemplínu nikdy ani nepriblížila. V päťdesiatych rokoch 16. storočia sa jeho majiteľ František Kendy pridal k šľachtickej opozícii proti habsburskému kráľovi Ferdinandovi I. V roku 1558 kráľovské vojsko hrad dobylo a zbúralo.
