Built to Watch a ValleyPostavený, aby strážil dolinu
Brekov belongs to the generation of castles raised across the Kingdom of Hungary after the Mongol invasion of 1241 — stone answers to a catastrophe that had demonstrated, in a single season, exactly what an unfortified country was worth. Its work was the Laborec valley: the route that runs north out of the Zemplín lowland, up the river and on toward the Carpathian passes into Poland. Whoever held the white crag could see who was coming, and from how far off. Kto držal biele bralo, videl, kto prichádza — a z akej diaľky.
From the early fourteenth century the whole of the upper Zemplín — its market towns, its villages and its castles — answered to a single family, the Drugeths, whose seat lay a short way up the river at Humenné. Brekov was one of their castles, and for as long as the family lasted this rock was administered from there. That is a story worth telling properly, and it has a chapter of its own further down the page.
The end came in the early eighteenth century, in the turmoil around the Rákóczi uprising, when the castle burned. Nobody rebuilt it. What survives is what fire and three centuries of weather left behind: wall stumps and a tower on a summit with nothing over it. In recent years volunteers have been consolidating the masonry — patient, unphotogenic work that is the only reason those walls are still upright — so from one season to the next, parts of the ruin may be fenced off or under scaffolding.
