Brekov CastleBrekovský hrad
The castle first appears in writing in 1307 as castrum Barko, held by Peter, son of Petenye — one of the powerful lords who ran the east of the kingdom almost as their own country. King Charles Robert of Anjou spent years breaking men like him, and in 1317 he gave Brekov to Filip Drugeth, of a family from the Kingdom of Naples who had come north with him. The Drugeths held this rock until 1486 and upper Zemplín until 1684, and in the first half of the fifteenth century they strengthened its walls. That is how an Italian name ends up carved into the history of a crag in the eastern Carpathians.
