After 1989 the state industries of Orava broke up and the region had to find something to sell that was not timber. Trstená found electronics: since 1997 control boards, power supplies and loudspeakers have been assembled here, with a cable and wire works beside the plant, and the factory is the largest employer for miles around. A second local firm builds forestry machinery — skidders and forwarders used across Central Europe — which is a fitting trade for a valley this heavily wooded. It is contract manufacturing, which means the work depends on decisions taken somewhere else, and everyone here knows it.Po roku 1989 sa štátny priemysel Oravy rozpadol a kraj musel nájsť niečo na predaj, čo nie je drevo. Trstená našla elektrotechniku: od roku 1997 sa tu montujú riadiace dosky, zdroje a reproduktory, vedľa závodu stojí káblovka a fabrika je najväčším zamestnávateľom široko-ďaleko. Druhá miestna firma stavia lesné stroje — približovacie traktory a vyvážacie súpravy používané po celej strednej Európe — čo je pre takto zalesnenú dolinu presné remeslo. Je to výroba na zákazku, teda práca závislá od rozhodnutí, ktoré padnú inde, a tu to vie každý.
