The Slovak National Uprising of August 1944 was pushed into the mountains and fought there through the winter, and the front reached the Orava valley at the end of March 1945. German soldiers burned Trstená as they pulled out: seventy-five houses were destroyed and many more badly damaged. Soviet troops took the town, and there is a monument to that on Štefánik Square and another to the uprising. A market town that had burned twice in the seventeenth century burned again for the same reason it had then: it stands on a road that armies use.Slovenské národné povstanie z augusta 1944 zatlačili do hôr, kde sa bojovalo celú zimu, a front sa do oravskej doliny dostal koncom marca 1945. Nemeckí vojaci Trstenú pri ústupe vypálili: zhorelo sedemdesiatpäť domov a mnoho ďalších bolo ťažko poškodených. Mesto obsadili sovietske jednotky; pamätník na to stojí na Námestí M. R. Štefánika a ďalší pripomína povstanie. Mestečko, ktoré v 17. storočí zhorelo dvakrát, zhorelo znova z tej istej príčiny ako vtedy: leží na ceste, ktorú používajú vojská.
