Archaeologists have found settlement at Topoľčianky from the sixth and seventh centuries — Slavs farming the strip of ground between the Žitava lowland and the wooded Tribeč hills. Nobody wrote any of it down; we know it only from what was dug up. That gap between the first people and the first document is completely normal in Slovakia, and it is worth holding on to: when a village says it was 'founded in 1293', what that really means is that 1293 is the year somebody first needed to put its name on parchment.Archeológovia našli v Topoľčiankach osídlenie zo 6. a 7. storočia — Slovanov, ktorí obrábali pás zeme medzi Žitavskou nížinou a zalesneným Tribečom. Nikto to nezapísal; vieme to len z toho, čo sa vykopalo. Ten odstup medzi prvými ľuďmi a prvou listinou je na Slovensku úplne bežný a oplatí sa naň pamätať: keď obec hovorí, že bola „založená v roku 1293“, znamená to iba toľko, že v tom roku niekto po prvý raz potreboval napísať jej meno na pergamen.
