Castles and lordsHrady a páni

The village is first mentioned in writing in 1293. Its lords took the village's own name, lived in a fortified house behind a water ditch where the château stands now, and hunted the Tribeč forest, which was the estate's game reserve and not common land. In the fourteenth century the head of the family, Comes Haslav, was granted the right to pan gold out of the local stream: these brooks carried enough of it to make a royal licence worth having, and a later lord is remembered as Peter Ryžiar, Peter the Panner. For ordinary villagers none of this meant much good — the same records show the family taking to robbery — and the whole life of the place was organised around what the lord's house needed.
