Ernest Bielik was born in Topoľčianky on 18 June 1917 and trained as a baker. On 6 August 1944 he was parachuted into the Low Tatras at the head of an eight-man organising group, and out of it grew the Jánošík partisan brigade, more than 1,300 strong, which fought at Telgárt and in the Turiec basin. Another man from the village, Ján Kukliš, commanded the insurgent armoured train Masaryk. The Uprising began on 29 August 1944 and was pushed back into the mountains by German forces that October; in January 1945, in Zlaté Moravce five kilometres away, the Germans tortured several partisans and hanged them from the radio mast in front of the church of St Michael. The front finally reached this country at the end of March 1945.Ernest Bielik sa narodil v Topoľčiankach 18. júna 1917 a vyučil sa za pekára. 6. augusta 1944 zoskočil na padáku do Nízkych Tatier na čele osemčlennej organizátorskej skupiny a vyrástla z nej partizánska brigáda Jánošík s vyše 1 300 mužmi, ktorá bojovala pri Telgárte a v Turčianskej kotline. Ďalší rodák, Ján Kukliš, velil povstaleckému pancierovému vlaku Masaryk. Povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944 a v októbri ho nemecké vojská zatlačili do hôr; v januári 1945 v Zlatých Moravciach päť kilometrov odtiaľto Nemci niekoľkých partizánov po mučení obesili na rozhlasovom stĺpe pred Kostolom svätého Michala. Koncom marca 1945 sem napokon dorazil front.
