History of Topoľčiansky hradDejiny — Topoľčiansky hrad

A real castle, in ruins, on a dolomite crag 525 metres up above the village of Podhradie at the south-eastern end of the Považský Inovec. It was begun by the most powerful man in the kingdom, wrecked by an emperor's own army, and given its famous white tower by nineteenth-century industrialists.Skutočný hrad — zrúcanina na dolomitovom brale vo výške 525 metrov nad obcou Podhradie na juhovýchodnom okraji Považského Inovca. Začal ho stavať najmocnejší muž kráľovstva, rozbilo ho cisárske vojsko a slávnu bielu vežu mu dali priemyselníci devätnásteho storočia.

Topoľčany appears in writing in 1235, as royal property: before the Mongols, not after. In the spring of 1241 a Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian royal army at Muhi and rode across the kingdom, and King Béla IV's answer was a programme of stone castles on high ground — that is why most Slovak castles exist at all. Here the story is less tidy. The village at the foot of the hill is first mentioned in 1245 under an older name and was only later called Podhradie, 'under the castle', because it served the castle; but the most recent research dates the stone fortress on the crag to around 1300, two generations after the Mongols. Not everything on a Slovak hilltop was thrown up in 1241, and this is a good place to learn it.Topoľčany sa v písomnostiach objavujú v roku 1235 ako kráľovský majetok — teda pred Mongolmi, nie po nich.

  2. c. 1305 – 1321okolo 1305 – 1321 Built by the lord of the VáhHrad pána Považia

The man who began the stone castle was Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ruled the north-west of the kingdom in everything but title; the research of the association that now looks after the ruin puts the start of the work shortly after 1305, and the town of Topoľčany dates the building to the years between 1291 and 1314. He never lived here — Trenčín was his seat — and this was an administrative centre and a shield for Trenčín from the east, the head of an estate that came to hold 26 villages. When he died in 1321 the king took his castles back, and Topoľčany then changed hands from family to family for four hundred years. A castle like this was less a home than an office: courts, taxes, grain stores and a prison. Keď v roku 1321 zomrel, kráľ mu hrady zobral a Topoľčany potom striedali majiteľov ďalšie štyri storočia. Hrad tohto typu nebol ani tak domovom, ako úradom: súd, dane, sýpky a väzenie.

  3. 1431–1434, so the story goes1431 – 1434, ako sa hovorí The Hussites who were never hereHusiti, ktorí tu nikdy neboli

Local tradition says a Hussite garrison took the castle and held it from 1431 to 1434. It is a believable story: Czech Hussite field armies really did raid this part of the kingdom in those years, and a little later the Czech troops of Ján Jiskra held real castles across Slovakia for decades. But when historians came looking for the evidence here they found none, and the settled view now is blunt — the Hussites were never on this hill. Keep that example. A story can be repeated for centuries, fit its period perfectly and still be untrue, and the only way to tell the difference is to go looking for the proof.Miestna tradícia hovorí, že hrad obsadila husitská posádka a držala ho v rokoch 1431 – 1434. Znie to hodnoverne: české husitské vojská v tých rokoch do tejto časti kráľovstva naozaj vpadávali a o čosi neskôr držali skutočné hrady po celom Slovensku desaťročia vojaci Jána Jiskru.

  4. 16th–17th century16. – 17. storočie Rebuilt for cannonPrestavba pre delá

Gunpowder changed what a wall had to be, and the castle changed with it: a Renaissance palace inside, a cannon bastion on the western side, a parkán — the lower outer wall that keeps an attacker away from the main one — pierced with loopholes, and a drawbridge over the ditch. None of it was decoration. After the Ottomans took Nové Zámky in 1663 the frontier of their empire lay about sixty kilometres to the south, and raiding parties ranged far up valleys like this one. Archaeologists digging in the castle have traced everyday life here running right through to the beginning of the eighteenth century, so people were living and working on this rock the whole time.Pušný prach zmenil, čo musí múr vydržať, a hrad sa menil s ním: vnútri renesančný palác, na západnej strane delová bašta, parkán — nižšia predsunutá hradba, ktorá drží útočníka ďalej od hlavného múru — prestrieľaný strieľňami a cez priekopu padací most. Nič z toho nebola ozdoba. Keď Osmani v roku 1663 dobyli Nové Zámky, hranica ich ríše ležala asi šesťdesiat kilometrov na juh a ich jazdecké oddiely zachádzali hlboko do dolín, ako je táto. Archeológovia na hrade vystopovali každodenný život až do začiatku osemnásteho storočia — celý ten čas sa teda na tejto skale bývalo a pracovalo.

  5. 1703–17111703 – 1711 Not the Turks — the emperor's own armyNie Turci, ale cisárske vojsko

Almost every ruined castle in Slovakia is said locally to have been destroyed by the Turks. The record here says something else: during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi at the beginning of the eighteenth century the castle was badly damaged by imperial troops — the emperor's own soldiers, taking a stronghold that had gone over to the rebels. That was the standard treatment. A castle in insurgent hands was worth more to Vienna as a ruin than as a fortress, and dozens of Slovak castles were deliberately slighted in and after those wars. If you remember one thing about Slovak castle ruins, remember that most of them were wrecked by their own government.

  6. mid-18th centurypolovica 18. storočia Patched up, then given upOpravený a potom opustený

The castle was repaired once more around the middle of the eighteenth century — and then the estate moved its administration down to Tovarníky in the valley, and with the offices gone the castle had no job left. It decayed steadily from there. This is the ordinary end of a Slovak hilltop castle: not a siege, not a fire, but an accounting decision. Roads, comfort and warm rooms in the valley beat draughty walls on a crag, and the ruin you walk through today is mostly the result of that choice.Okolo polovice osemnásteho storočia hrad ešte raz opravili — lenže potom panstvo presťahovalo svoju správu dolu do Tovarník a keď odišli úrady, hrad stratil úlohu. Odvtedy vytrvalo pustol.

  7. 19th century, chiefly its later decades19. storočie, najmä jeho záver The white tower is the newest thing hereBiela veža je tu tá najmladšia vec

In the nineteenth century educated Europe fell in love with ruins: landowners stopped quarrying them for stone and started improving them instead. The last family to own this castle were the Stummers, industrialists whose money came from the works down in the valley, and in that century — the sources point chiefly to its later decades — the main tower was finished off in the romantic taste and part of the fortification was conserved. That is the slim white tower everybody photographs. It is not a forgery; it is a nineteenth-century opinion about the Middle Ages, built in stone. But it is the youngest thing on the hill, not the oldest.V devätnástom storočí sa vzdelaná Európa zamilovala do zrúcanín: majitelia ich prestali rozoberať na kameň a začali ich vylepšovať.

  8. 1944 · 1 April 19451944 · 1. apríl 1945 Partisans in the Považský InovecPartizáni v Považskom Inovci

The ruin took no part in this war, but the hill it stands on did. After the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 the wooded Považský Inovec became partisan ground, and the people of Podhradie, the village at the foot of the castle, strongly supported the partisans working in these mountains — many of them joined the fighting outright, at a time when helping a partisan was punished by death and German units burned whole villages elsewhere in Slovakia for it. Topoľčany was taken on 1 April 1945 by soldiers of the First Romanian Army, fighting against Germany after Romania changed sides.

  9. since 2009od roku 2009 Volunteers put the drawbridge backDobrovoľníci vrátili padací most

A civic association took the ruin on, and after research campaigns in 2009 and 2010 it has been consolidating the castle ever since, helped by Norway Grants and Slovak foundations. The drawbridge over the ditch has been rebuilt, the parkán wall raised back to its parapet with loopholes, the historic ground levels restored, and a wooden stair now climbs to the western cannon bastion as a viewpoint. The archaeology done alongside the building work reconstructed daily life up here from the late thirteenth century to the early eighteenth. Access from Podhradie by the marked path is free — a village of fewer than three hundred people now looking after a castle that once administered twenty-six of them.
