The man who began the stone castle was Matúš Čák of Trenčín, the oligarch who ruled the north-west of the kingdom in everything but title; the research of the association that now looks after the ruin puts the start of the work shortly after 1305, and the town of Topoľčany dates the building to the years between 1291 and 1314. He never lived here — Trenčín was his seat — and this was an administrative centre and a shield for Trenčín from the east, the head of an estate that came to hold 26 villages. When he died in 1321 the king took his castles back, and Topoľčany then changed hands from family to family for four hundred years.
