Oponice is two places with one history: a ruined castle on the ridge and a manor down in the village, joined by a family that took its surname from the village and spent five hundred years moving downhill. What survived best is not the castle but the library.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Oponice appears in writing for the first time in a charter of the Nitra chapter — the college of canons at the cathedral, which drew up legal documents for the whole region — dated 16 November 1244. That is three years after the Mongol army passed through the kingdom, at exactly the moment when Béla IV was pressing his nobles to build stone castles on hilltops. People had lived on this stretch of the Nitra valley for thousands of years before that: there are finds here from the Neolithic and from the Iron Age. The charter is the first time the name was written down, which is not the same thing as the beginning.
The castle was built on the ridge in the late thirteenth century by the Čák clan and is first mentioned in 1300. That kindred produced Matúš Čák of Trenčín, who ruled most of what is now western Slovakia in his own name, ignoring the king, until his death in 1321. Afterwards the crown took his lordship apart: in 1326 Charles I returned property here to the Nitra chapter, leaving Oponice and Kovarce as the castle's estate, and in 1329 the castle passed to Mikuláš Gutkeled. Then in 1392 it came to a noble family who did what many did — they took their surname from their new seat. In the Latin and Hungarian of the chancery Oponice was Appony, and so the family became the Apponyi: in Slovak, Aponiovci.
In 1430 a Hussite army took Oponice castle and damaged it; the repairs were made quickly. The Hussites were the armies of the Czech religious reform movement, and through the 1420s and 1430s their columns raided far into what is now Slovakia — partly for supplies and plunder, partly to punish a kingdom that was fighting against them. They fought in the modern way, with field guns, handguns and wagon forts. That is one reason castles like Oponice spent the next century thickening walls and adding bastions instead of raising taller towers.V roku 1430 husitské vojská hrad dobyli a poškodili; opravili ho rýchlo. Husiti boli vojská českého náboženského reformného hnutia a v dvadsiatych a tridsiatych rokoch 15. storočia zachádzali ich výpravy hlboko na dnešné Slovensko — čiastočne pre korisť a zásoby, čiastočne ako trest kráľovstvu, ktoré proti nim bojovalo. Bojovali moderne: s poľnými delami, ručnicami a vozovými hradbami.
After Mohács in 1526 and the fall of Buda in 1541, castles in this part of the kingdom became frontier property overnight. In 1542 Benedikt Apponyi rebuilt Oponice in Renaissance form — lower, heavier, with a massive corner bastion on the western side that is still one of the clearest things on the ridge. But a hilltop is a miserable address in peacetime, and from 1612 the family were arguing among themselves over the estate. In 1645 the owners left the castle for good and moved down to the village, where they had a Renaissance manor house. Nobody stormed them out; they simply preferred the valley, as almost every noble family in Slovakia did in the same century.
The empty castle served one more time. In 1708, during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi against the Habsburgs, it was held as a strongpoint by the rebel — kuruc — army. That was the end of its story: whether the fighting wrecked it or whether it was simply left to rot afterwards, nobody ever repaired it, and what you walk through today is the shape it was left in. Notice what is missing from this account. There is no Turkish siege of Oponice, although you will hear that about half the ruins in Slovakia; what finished this castle was a war between Hungarians and their own king.
In 1774 Count Anton Juraj Apponyi began buying books, and by the end of 1780 he had about 30,000 volumes — an Enlightenment nobleman trying to fit all of human knowledge into one room. The family kept the collection in Vienna until 1825, then built a house for it in Bratislava and opened it to readers on 13 June 1827, which was a rare thing for a private aristocratic library to do. After a quarrel with the city over who paid the running costs, the library was closed in 1846 and the whole collection moved home to Oponice, where a neoclassical wing was added to the manor to hold it; the move was completed in 1868. A private library that had been a public one, shelved in a village of a few hundred people — that is the genuinely unusual thing about Oponice.V roku 1774 začal gróf Anton Juraj Aponi kupovať knihy a do konca roku 1780 ich mal okolo 30 000 — osvietenský šľachtic sa pokúšal zmestiť všetko vtedajšie poznanie do jednej sály.
German occupation troops entered Topoľčany on 3 September 1944, days after the Slovak National Uprising began. The front reached the valley the following spring: Topoľčany was taken on 1 April 1945 by soldiers of the First Romanian Army, which fought alongside the Red Army after Romania changed sides in 1944. The Apponyi family's ownership of the estate had already ended in 1935, and they did not come back.
After the communist takeover of 1948 the manor was nationalised and used for schooling, and the library was taken apart and carried away: part of it to Bratislava in 1965, to Martin in 1972 and to Diviaky in 1992. The books were kept — but not here.Po komunistickom prevrate v roku 1948 kaštieľ znárodnili a slúžil školstvu, knižnicu rozobrali a odviezli: časť do Bratislavy v roku 1965, do Martina v roku 1972 a do Diviak v roku 1992. Knihy sa zachovali — ale nie tu.
In 2007 the ruined manor was bought by a hotel company and restored, and in 2011 the Apponyi library was reinstalled in its own neoclassical wing, where it is now a branch of the Slovak National Library and can be visited. Not everything came back: the collection had been thinned by sales after 1935 and by four decades of storage elsewhere. Even so, hardly any aristocratic library in Central Europe survived the twentieth century as a collection at all, and this one did. The castle on the ridge above is still a free, unstaffed ruin — one family, two buildings, two completely different fates.V roku 2007 zrúcaný kaštieľ kúpila hotelová spoločnosť a obnovila ho; v roku 2011 sa Aponiovská knižnica vrátila do svojho klasicistického krídla, kde je dnes pracoviskom Slovenskej národnej knižnice a dá sa navštíviť.
