The empty castle served one more time. In 1708, during the uprising of Francis II Rákóczi against the Habsburgs, it was held as a strongpoint by the rebel — kuruc — army. That was the end of its story: whether the fighting wrecked it or whether it was simply left to rot afterwards, nobody ever repaired it, and what you walk through today is the shape it was left in. Notice what is missing from this account. There is no Turkish siege of Oponice, although you will hear that about half the ruins in Slovakia; what finished this castle was a war between Hungarians and their own king.Prázdny hrad poslúžil ešte raz.
