Start on the hill. The marked trail leaves the village of Oponice and climbs steadily through oak and hornbeam — three quarters of an hour, an hour if you stop to look — onto a ridge where the castle sits stretched out along the crest rather than piled up in a keep. What survives is a long ruin: curtain wall, tower footings, the shells of the palace buildings, and the terraces where the outer ward was cut into the slope. Volunteers have consolidated the most endangered stretches in recent years, so more of it is safe to walk than there was a generation ago.Začnite na kopci. The Apponyi manor — a long, low country house with a park behind it — has been restored and put back into use, and the family's historic library is installed in it. Seeing the library is a guided visit rather than a wander: you go in with someone, you are shown the room, and the room does the rest.
