After Mohács in 1526 and the fall of Buda in 1541, castles in this part of the kingdom became frontier property overnight. In 1542 Benedikt Apponyi rebuilt Oponice in Renaissance form — lower, heavier, with a massive corner bastion on the western side that is still one of the clearest things on the ridge. But a hilltop is a miserable address in peacetime, and from 1612 the family were arguing among themselves over the estate. In 1645 the owners left the castle for good and moved down to the village, where they had a Renaissance manor house. Nobody stormed them out; they simply preferred the valley, as almost every noble family in Slovakia did in the same century.Po Moháči v roku 1526 a po páde Budína v roku 1541 sa aj z tunajších hradov zrazu stali hraničné pevnosti. V roku 1542 dal Benedikt Aponi hrad prestavať v renesančnom duchu — nižšie, mohutnejšie, s ťažkou nárožnou baštou na západnej strane, ktorá je dodnes najzreteľnejšou časťou zrúcaniny. Lenže v čase mieru je vrchol kopca mizerná adresa a rod sa od roku 1612 o panstvo súdil. V roku 1645 majitelia hrad definitívne opustili a presťahovali sa do podhradia, kde mali renesančný kaštieľ. Nikto ich odtiaľ nevyhnal; jednoducho dali prednosť doline, ako takmer každý šľachtický rod na Slovensku v tom istom storočí.
