In 1430 a Hussite army took Oponice castle and damaged it; the repairs were made quickly. The Hussites were the armies of the Czech religious reform movement, and through the 1420s and 1430s their columns raided far into what is now Slovakia — partly for supplies and plunder, partly to punish a kingdom that was fighting against them. They fought in the modern way, with field guns, handguns and wagon forts. That is one reason castles like Oponice spent the next century thickening walls and adding bastions instead of raising taller towers.V roku 1430 husitské vojská hrad dobyli a poškodili; opravili ho rýchlo. Husiti boli vojská českého náboženského reformného hnutia a v dvadsiatych a tridsiatych rokoch 15. storočia zachádzali ich výpravy hlboko na dnešné Slovensko — čiastočne pre korisť a zásoby, čiastočne ako trest kráľovstvu, ktoré proti nim bojovalo. Bojovali moderne: s poľnými delami, ručnicami a vozovými hradbami. Aj preto hrady ako Oponice v ďalšom storočí radšej zosilňovali múry a stavali bašty, než by dvíhali vyššie veže.
