The castle was built on the ridge in the late thirteenth century by the Čák clan and is first mentioned in 1300. That kindred produced Matúš Čák of Trenčín, who ruled most of what is now western Slovakia in his own name, ignoring the king, until his death in 1321. Afterwards the crown took his lordship apart: in 1326 Charles I returned property here to the Nitra chapter, leaving Oponice and Kovarce as the castle's estate, and in 1329 the castle passed to Mikuláš Gutkeled. Then in 1392 it came to a noble family who did what many did — they took their surname from their new seat. In the Latin and Hungarian of the chancery Oponice was Appony, and so the family became the Apponyi: in Slovak, Aponiovci.Hrad na hrebeni postavili koncom 13. storočia Čákovci a prvý raz sa spomína v roku 1300. Z tohto rodu pochádzal aj Matúš Čák Trenčiansky, ktorý až do smrti v roku 1321 vládol väčšine dnešného západného Slovenska po svojom a kráľa neuznával. Potom kráľovská moc jeho panstvo rozobrala: v roku 1326 vrátil Karol Róbert časť majetkov Nitrianskej kapitule a hradnému panstvu ostali Oponice a Kovarce, v roku 1329 prešiel hrad na Mikuláša Gutkeleda. V roku 1392 ho získal šľachtický rod, ktorý urobil to, čo mnohí — prijal priezvisko podľa svojho nového sídla. Oponice sa v latinčine a maďarčine kancelárií volali Appony, a tak vznikli Aponiovci.
