A royal tax survey of 1427 counted sixty-seven portals in the village. A porta was a gateway wide enough for a loaded hay cart to pass through, and the kingdom used it as the taxable unit of a peasant holding, so the number works as a rough census: this was a substantial place, not a hamlet. In 1441 the Bohemian captain Ján Jiskra's troops occupied Gemer without destroying the castle above. Villages of this size are the reason a castle was worth holding at all — the rock produced nothing, the fields and forges below produced everything.Kráľovský daňový súpis z roku 1427 napočítal v obci šesťdesiatsedem port. Porta bola brána taká široká, aby ňou prešiel naložený voz so senom, a kráľovstvo ju používalo ako zdaniteľnú jednotku sedliackej usadlosti — číslo teda funguje ako hrubé sčítanie: bola to poriadna dedina, nie osada. V roku 1441 obsadili Gemer vojaci českého kapitána Jána Jiskru, hrad nad obcou však nezničili. Práve dediny takejto veľkosti sú dôvodom, prečo sa hrad oplatilo držať — bralo nevyprodukovalo nič, polia a hámre pod ním všetko.
