The story of the village starts with the rock above it. Slovak accounts hold that the cone probably carried an older earth-and-timber fort and that it sheltered King Béla IV during the Mongol invasion of 1241 — probably, because the documentary evidence is thin and a student should know the difference between probably and certainly. After the invasion the king gave large estates in Gemer to the Ákos clan, ancestors of the Bebeks, and pressed his nobles to build castles of stone. A stone castle needs a permanent settlement under it: masons and carters while it goes up, then ploughmen, smiths, brewers and soldiers for as long as it stands.Príbeh obce sa začína bralom nad ňou. Slovenské pramene uvádzajú, že homoľa niesla pravdepodobne staršie hradisko a že počas mongolského vpádu v roku 1241 poskytlo útočisko kráľovi Belovi IV. — pravdepodobne, lebo písomných dokladov je málo a rozdiel medzi pravdepodobne a určite treba vedieť. Po vpáde kráľ rozdal veľké majetky v Gemeri Ákošovcom, predkom Bebekovcov, a tlačil šľachtu, aby stavala kamenné hrady. A kamenný hrad potrebuje pod sebou trvalé osídlenie: najprv murárov a povozníkov, kým rastie, potom oráčov, kováčov, pivovarníkov a vojakov, kým stojí.
