In 1823 Josef Bergmann built the Roman waterfall in the manor park, nine metres of engineered romance and the first structure of its kind in Slovakia. The Lutheran church got its tower between 1826 and 1834. A survey of 1828 counted 154 houses and 1,217 inhabitants — noticeably more people than live in Betliar today. In 1848 the Hungarian parliament abolished serfdom, so the villagers stopped owing labour days to the manor; and in 1853 another smelting works was built, so most of them went on working for the same family, now for a wage. That is the honest shape of 1848 in an estate village: real freedom, unchanged ownership.V roku 1823 postavil Josef Bergmann v kaštieľskom parku Rímsky vodopád, deväť metrov vypočítanej romantiky a prvú stavbu svojho druhu na Slovensku. Evanjelický kostol dostal vežu v rokoch 1826 – 1834. Súpis z roku 1828 napočítal 154 domov a 1 217 obyvateľov — citeľne viac ľudí, než v Betliari žije dnes.
