Betliar appears to have been founded at the end of the thirteenth century as a mining settlement, and it is first named in writing in 1330, as Bethler. Its Roman Catholic church dates from the first half of the fourteenth century, which usually means a settled parish with enough people to pay for a stone building. Its lords were the Bebeks of the Štítnik branch, the great family of medieval Gemer. Everything in that first paragraph is one sentence in disguise: people came here for what was in the rock, and the church, the lord and the written record all followed the ore.Betliar vznikol podľa všetkého na konci trinásteho storočia ako banícka osada a prvý raz je písomne doložený v roku 1330 ako Bethler.
