History of BetliarDejiny — Betliar

Betliar began as a mining settlement in the Slaná valley and spent six centuries doing what Gemer villages did: digging ore, burning charcoal and hammering iron for the family that owned the hills. Then the Andrássys put their country house and its park at the edge of the village, and today far more people come for the manor than for anything Betliar itself makes. The census still shows the older story underneath. A quarter of the village is Lutheran, which is the Reformation of the sixteenth century still visible in the twenty-first.

Betliar appears to have been founded at the end of the thirteenth century as a mining settlement, and it is first named in writing in 1330, as Bethler. Its Roman Catholic church dates from the first half of the fourteenth century, which usually means a settled parish with enough people to pay for a stone building. Its lords were the Bebeks of the Štítnik branch, the great family of medieval Gemer. Everything in that first paragraph is one sentence in disguise: people came here for what was in the rock, and the church, the lord and the written record all followed the ore.

  2. 1557 · the later sixteenth century1557 · druhá polovica 16. storočia The Reformation, and a tax paid to the sultanReformácia a daň sultánovi

In the second half of the sixteenth century Betliar became an appurtenance of Krásna Hôrka and was run from that castle. A Hungarian account records that from 1557 the village was paying tax to the Ottomans — inside the Kingdom of Hungary, on the king's side of the line, and still buying quiet from the sultan's collectors. The same century brought the Reformation to Gemer, and it took hold here for good: four hundred and fifty years later a quarter of Betliar is still Lutheran, which is as long a shadow as any battle ever cast.V druhej polovici šestnásteho storočia sa Betliar stal príslušenstvom Krásnej Hôrky a spravovali ho z toho hradu.

  3. 1676 · 17131676 · 1713 A new lord for the villageNový zemepán pre dedinu

Late in the seventeenth century the Andrássy family split into branches and Štefan Andrássy, made a baron in 1676, took Betliar and founded the branch named after the village; a Hungarian account dates the formal grant of the estate and manor to Baron Pavol Andrássy in 1713. For the villagers this was not a change of country but a change of landlord, and the landlord is who mattered: he set the labour days, took the dues, owned the forest the charcoal came from and the stream that drove the hammers. Around them the anti-Habsburg risings of Thököly and Rákóczi moved up and down this valley, and armies on any side had to be fed by the people they marched past.

This is the century when the village takes the shape it kept until modern times. By 1781 Betliar had an iron smelting works and two hammer forges — water-driven hammers beating raw iron into bar — and the forests around fed them with charcoal, which is heavy work for a great many people. In 1792–1795 the Andrássys enlarged the manor and began laying out the landscape park that now covers about eighty hectares beside the village. In 1794 the Lutheran congregation built its church in the classical style, which tells you plainly how many of the villagers were Lutheran by then. V roku 1794 si evanjelický cirkevný zbor postavil klasicistický kostol — a to samo hovorí, koľko obyvateľov bolo vtedy evanjelikov.

In 1823 Josef Bergmann built the Roman waterfall in the manor park, nine metres of engineered romance and the first structure of its kind in Slovakia. The Lutheran church got its tower between 1826 and 1834. A survey of 1828 counted 154 houses and 1,217 inhabitants — noticeably more people than live in Betliar today. In 1848 the Hungarian parliament abolished serfdom, so the villagers stopped owing labour days to the manor; and in 1853 another smelting works was built, so most of them went on working for the same family, now for a wage. That is the honest shape of 1848 in an estate village: real freedom, unchanged ownership.V roku 1823 postavil Josef Bergmann v kaštieľskom parku Rímsky vodopád, deväť metrov vypočítanej romantiky a prvú stavbu svojho druhu na Slovensku. Evanjelický kostol dostal vežu v rokoch 1826 – 1834. Súpis z roku 1828 napočítal 154 domov a 1 217 obyvateľov — citeľne viac ľudí, než v Betliari žije dnes.

  6. the later nineteenth century · 1880 – 1886koniec 19. storočia · 1880 – 1886 Working for the iron countRobota pre železného grófa

Under Austria-Hungary the valley industrialised properly: an iron factory started work at Betliar in the later nineteenth century, and the man behind the family business was Emanuel Andrássy (1821–1891), chairman of the association of Upper Hungarian ironmasters and nicknamed the iron count. Between 1880 and 1886 he rebuilt the manor into the tall-roofed romantic house that stands there now. For the village this meant two employers who were the same employer: the works and the estate. It also meant that when the iron went, most of the reason for the village's size went with it.Za Rakúsko-Uhorska sa dolina poriadne industrializovala: koncom devätnásteho storočia začala v Betliari pracovať železiarska fabrika a za rodinným podnikaním stál Emanuel Andráši (1821 – 1891), predseda spolku hornouhorských železiarov, prezývaný železný gróf.

  7. 1918 – 19201918 – 1920 A new state, an old trade in troubleNový štát, staré remeslo v ťažkostiach

In 1918 Austria-Hungary fell apart and Betliar became part of Czechoslovakia, confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon in 1920. Unlike the villages a few kilometres south, Betliar stayed overwhelmingly Slovak-speaking, and it still is. The hard part of the interwar years was economic rather than national: the Gemer ironworks had grown up supplying a single large empire, and inside a small republic with new customs borders many of them could not compete. A valley that had lived on iron for six hundred years began, slowly, to send its young people somewhere else.V roku 1918 sa Rakúsko-Uhorsko rozpadlo a Betliar sa stal súčasťou Česko-Slovenska, čo potvrdila Trianonská zmluva v roku 1920.

The First Vienna Award of November 1938 ran the new Hungarian border through Rožňava, which is five kilometres down the valley, so Rožňava was ceded and Betliar stayed inside the wartime Slovak State. Which side of that line a village sat on decided a great deal. In August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising broke out, partisan groups operated in the Ore Mountains above the village with help from local people, and Ján Miklóšik of Betliar fought in the Uprising. The front arrived in January 1945: Rožňava was taken on 23 January 1945 by the Romanian Fourth Army within the Soviet Second Ukrainian Front. V auguste 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie, v Rudohorí nad obcou pôsobili partizánske skupiny s pomocou miestnych a Ján Miklóšik z Betliara bol priamym účastníkom Povstania. Front prišiel v januári 1945: Rožňavu dobyla 23. januára 1945 rumunská 4. armáda v zostave sovietskeho 2. ukrajinského frontu.

In 1945 the Andrássy estate passed to the state and the manor was turned into a museum with its own contents still inside — the single decision that makes Betliar nationally important. The works and the forests were nationalised too, and for forty years the village worked for state enterprises in the Slaná valley and in Rožňava, or commuted further. The Roman Catholic church was restored in 1973. In 1978 the manor park was entered on the international list of significant historic gardens, and in 1985 the whole complex was declared a national cultural monument, which is when the museum, rather than the ironworks, became the thing Betliar was known for.V roku 1945 prešlo andrášiovské panstvo na štát a z kaštieľa urobili múzeum aj s pôvodným zariadením vnútri — jediné rozhodnutie, ktoré robí Betliar celoštátne dôležitým.

  10. 2021 · 20252021 · 2025 Nine hundred people beside a great houseDeväťsto ľudí vedľa veľkého domu

Betliar had 907 inhabitants at the end of 2025, three hundred fewer than the survey of 1828 recorded — the long story of a valley whose work moved away. By religion, the 2021 census found almost half the village declaring none, a quarter Lutheran and a fifth Roman Catholic. That Lutheran quarter is the sixteenth century still on the books. Most visitors see the manor and the park and drive on to Rožňava, which is a perfectly good morning; the valley road behind the village, climbing towards the Ore Mountains where the ore and the partisans both came from, is the part almost nobody adds.
