The Košice–Bohumín railway came up the Hornád valley in 1871 and the line runs straight through the town. It carried out ore and timber — and before long, people. Between the 1880s and 1914 the Spiš and Šariš sent more emigrants to the United States than almost any other part of Hungary; whole villages lost a third of their young men to the mines and mills of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Some came back with money and built a house on the square. Most did not come back.Košicko-bohumínska železnica prišla Hornádskou dolinou roku 1871 a trať vedie priamo cez mesto. Odvážala rudu a drevo — a čoskoro aj ľudí. Medzi osemdesiatymi rokmi 19. storočia a rokom 1914 poslal Spiš so Šarišom do Spojených štátov viac vysťahovalcov než takmer ktorákoľvek iná časť Uhorska; celé dediny prišli o tretinu mladých mužov, ktorí odišli do baní a hutí v Pensylvánii a Ohiu. Niektorí sa vrátili s peniazmi a postavili si dom na námestí. Väčšina sa nevrátila.
