The Mongol army swept through the kingdom in 1241 and the Spiš was among the regions it emptied. Two years later, in 1243, this place appears in writing for the first time — which is the pattern all over the region, because Béla IV spent the years after the invasion granting land, confirming settlers and repopulating the Spiš as fast as he could. The Latin name in those earliest records is villa Latina, the village of the Latins.
