The front reached the town in the autumn of 1944: the battle for Sečovce began at midnight on 2 December 1944, and Soviet troops took it while the Germans pulled back west onto prepared positions on the Dargov pass. There the advance stopped dead. From 9 December 1944 until the night of 17–18 January 1945 the Red Army fought a German mountain corps for that ridge, in winter, uphill — one of the hardest local battles of the whole war in Slovakia. The pass was forced on 18 January 1945 and Košice was liberated the next day.Front dorazil k mestu na jeseň 1944: bitka o Sečovce sa začala o polnoci 2. decembra 1944 a sovietske vojská mesto obsadili, kým sa Nemci sťahovali na západ na pripravené pozície v Dargovskom priesmyku. Tam sa postup úplne zastavil. Od 9. decembra 1944 do noci zo 17. na 18. januára 1945 zvádzala Červená armáda o tento hrebeň boj s nemeckým horským zborom — v zime a do kopca, a bola to jedna z najťažších miestnych bitiek celej vojny na Slovensku. Priesmyk padol 18. januára 1945 a nasledujúci deň oslobodili Košice.
