The ground under Michalovce has been lived on since the Stone Age. Archaeologists have found Palaeolithic traces and Neolithic farming settlements around the town and along the foot of the Vihorlat, and those finds are what fills the archaeology rooms of the Zemplín Museum today. That is not the same thing as saying the town is that old: a settlement site and a town are two different things, and no straight line runs from one to the other. What the finds do prove is that this warm, well-watered plain was always worth farming — which is why somebody has been living on it for thousands of years without a break.Zem pod Michalovcami je obývaná od doby kamennej. Archeológovia našli v okolí mesta a na úpätí Vihorlatu stopy z paleolitu aj neolitické roľnícke osady a práve tieto nálezy dnes napĺňajú archeologické sály Zemplínskeho múzea. Neznamená to však, že mesto je také staré: osada a mesto sú dve rôzne veci a od jednej k druhému nevedie priama čiara. Nálezy dokazujú niečo iné — že túto teplú a dobre zavlaženú rovinu sa oplatilo obrábať odjakživa. Preto na nej niekto býva už tisícročia bez prestávky.
